Federal Centre of Breeding Research on Cultivated Plants Selection, structure and multiplication of the working collection Christoph U.Germeier Avena genetic resources for quality in human consumption (AVEQ) Startup Meeting, Clermont Ferrand 2007 Structure of the Working Collection as proposed In total 600 accessions: - 100 wild species accessions - 200 landraces - 200 obsolete cultivars - 100 modern cultivars (to be provided by breeders) 70 accessions selected for quality traits from the previous project: (seed weight, kernel weight, protein content) Avena genetic resources for quality in human consumption (AVEQ) Startup Meeting, Clermont Ferrand 2007 Maximizing variability in the working collection a) European countries sensu latu (including non EU countries like Albania, Belarus, Moldova, Russia and the Ukraine) should be represented equally. b) Available time information (acquisition, collecting, registration) was classified into <1900, 1900-1950, > 1950 (and actual cultivars). Time classes should be represented as equal as possible c) Botanical varieties have been determined by genebanks for the cultivated species (A.strigosa, A.abyssinica, A.byzantina, A.sativa) in variable extent. This information was used for probable duplicates also in other collections. It was sought to get botanical varieties represented as equally as possible d) If collecting site information was available it was sought first to represent all levels of elevation with a special emphasis to higher elevations (cold tolerance) and latitudes. Further geographic information was used to get as much as possible geographic distance. This approach favours accessions with more complete passport data. WP3: Five to ten standards in five replicdations. WP4: Field experiments with a minimum of five ? ten standards in five replications. Standards - Questions Only modern cultivars or also other material? Use material multiplied at the multiplication sites or material provided from breeders? How many standards to use in field experiments – in laboratory analysis? (e.g. use a reduced set selected by performance in field for lab analysis Avena genetic resources for quality in human consumption (AVEQ) Startup Meeting, Clermont Ferrand 2007 Standards suggested so far: Nordic region (Estonia, Sweden): Belinda (SW): represents the mid-late varieties in this region; currently the main variety in Sweden, Norway, Finland, also listed in the Baltic countries. Jaak (Jogeva): One of the Estonian latest-bred varieties, 2-3 days earlier than the other Estonian a very early variety would be the Norwegian Leila Western Europe (France): Auteuil: most cultivated spring cultivar in France, was already standard in the previous project Evora: second most cultivated winter cultivar in France, Avena genetic resources for quality in human consumption (AVEQ) Startup Meeting, Clermont Ferrand 2007 Standards suggested so far: Central Europe (Czech Republic, Germany, Poland): Ivory: has been reported to accumulate less DON because of low hull content.
