Grade Level: 2nd Overview During this lesson the students will be learning different insect parts through memorization and fun games, with an evaluation at the end of the lesson. Objective Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to identify different parts of a flies body, and they will demonstrate this knowledge by quizzing themselves using the program Quizlet. Standards 2.2.1 (Indiana Department of Education’s Standards and Resources – 2nd Grade) The Living Environment: Students ask questions about a variety of living things and everyday events that can be answered through observations. o They consider things and processes that plants and animals need to stay alive. o Students begin to understand plant and animal interaction. o Investigate that most objects are made of parts (Core standard) o Observe and identify different external features of plants and animals and describe how these features help them live in different environments. Log on to www.quizlet.com On the home page, students will sign in and open create flashcards. If they do not have a user name they can sign up for free with the teachers’ assistance. Following this, the student will begin to create flashcards using the program. The flashcards will consist of different parts of the flies’ body that the teacher should include in their handout. Sample Body Part List: head thorax abdomen wings antennae 4. The students will begin creating the flashcards by inserting “Fly Parts” into the title section, inserting “Science Vocabulary” into the subject area, and finally by filling out the terms and their definitions of the flies body parts. If needed a student may enter an image for a visual aide. 5. When the flashcards are created the student may then click “Learn” to start memorizing the cards. When the student has finished, he/she can click on “Test” to give themselves an examination of what they have been learning. They will complete the flashcard test. Evaluation 1. The student will be evaluated by a test that is available with any flashcard set under “Test”. 2. Once they click on the test button, they will be shown a page with questions in the form of multiple choice, written response, and true false. 3. When they are done, they click “Check Answers” and then the program will grade the students.
