Job Purpose
All posts, whether providing or supporting the provision of our services, allow The Kilbryde Hospice
mission and values to be upheld.
The purpose of this post is to lead with the organisation and delivery of Day Services patient care for
patients who have life limiting illnesses: to be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation
and evaluation of patient care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and to provide support
for carers and families within Day Services.
Key Responsibilities

To facilitate and maintain an environment where safe and accountable practice is
encouraged by appropriate staff development in a climate of mutual support which will
enable continuous development

To manage and coordinate a person-centred rehabilitative service for patients
attending outpatients and day services at Kilbryde Hospice

To ensure that high clinical standards and quality of care are maintained, promoting a
multi-disciplinary approach and continuity of patient care wherever possible.

To be responsible for the development and support the delivery of therapeutic
programmes of care across South Lanarkshire working collaboratively with our primary
care and acute sector colleagues.

To be accountable for the overall management of, recruitment, deployment and
supervision of outpatients and day services staff and volunteers ensuring the coordination of all services provided to the patients.

Ensure clear feedback to the Clinical Services Manager any issues arising to ensure the
welfare of staff, patients and volunteers remains paramount at all times.

To develop and maintain innovative and high quality multi-disciplinary practices and
satisfy appropriate codes of conduct and ensure service provision is appropriately
focused.

To contribute to Kilbryde Hospice planning including audits and quality / best practice
initiatives.

To attend relevant senior management meetings within the organisation

Where appropriate, promote links with external agencies as well as GP`s ,community and
specialist nurses and palliative care colleagues. Identifying areas of common interest and
enabling the provision of integrated packages of care.

To maintain accurate statistics and records as required using Crosscare
Responsibilities of all staff.



To carry out the duties and responsibilities in compliance with Kilbryde Hospice policies and
procedures, current legislation and codes of conduct as applicable.
To be aware of working practices of any volunteers feeding back any concerns to the Volunteer
Consultant
To undertake the requirements of the role with an awareness of responsibilities under Kilbryde
Hospice Health and Safety regulations.

To comply with current Kilbryde Hospice infection control policies and procedures.

To maintain good public relations and promote the Hospice ethos and care in the wider community.

To provide support in the form of training to other team members as appropriate.

To undertake such other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grading and
nature of the post.
Clinical Duties








Work with the multidisciplinary team to provide a high standard of specialist palliative care
to patients and their carers within Day Services, including the facilitation of a safe and
effective discharge from the service, where appropriate.
To support a specialist nursing/AHP resource across day hospice services.
To work closely with the community nurses to ensure the development and maintenance of
a problem solving approach to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of
care for all patients.
To develop and support the delivery of therapeutic programmes of care across South
Lanarkshire.
To act as a specialist resource for patients, carers, staff, volunteers and non-specialist
groups of staff.
To be responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of agreed clinical
policies and procedures. To ensure that review and regular update is undertaken in line
with the changing and developing service within Kilbryde Hospice and nationally.
Foster a sensitive and caring environment for patients, carers, staff and volunteers leading
the outpatients and day services teams by example and professionalism.
To maintain/develop clinical skills through regular direct clinical input.
To ensure that services support access for all and address health inequalities
Managerial




To manage the outpatients and day services ensuring the effective deployment of staff, allied
health professionals and volunteers to meet care needs. This will include overseeing duty
rotas, anticipating problems and taking appropriate action.
Be responsible for assessment and management of risk, including infection control within
outpatients and day services.
Develop and project manage new service interventions/ activities to meet the needs of
patients and carers
Participate in the management rota for the Kilbryde Hospice.






Have line management responsibility for designated staff including AHP team and Care
Assistant including ensuring professional registration, insurance, continual development and
supervision requirements are met.
Undertake management of sickness, absence and performance issues, reporting to the clinical
Services Manager.
Participate in the Kilbryde Hospice Performance Development Review programme
undertaking PDRs with directly managed staff members and assisting them to formulate their
Personal Development Review plans, as well as ensuring appropriate system for reviews of all
directly managed staff and volunteers.
Be responsible for the recruitment, selection and induction of staff and volunteers within Day
Services and Drop In
Ensure all activities are consistent with Kilbryde Hospice and the Hospice’s policies.
Play an active role as a member of the Senior Management Team including contributing to
relevant hospice strategy and plans.

Governance

Play a key role in Kilbryde Hospice Clinical Governance Programme, participating in, and
supporting research and audit both within the Hospice, regionally and nationally.
Actively encourage and participate in the Clinical Supervision process.
Develop research based practice and lead practice development activities in Day Services.
Develop clinical protocols to facilitate practice developments, benchmarking where
possible, to ensure that the Hospice adheres to good practice and makes optimum use of
resources to achieve the highest standards of care and service.
Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers, ensuring that staff
and volunteers are aware of their responsibility in relation to health and safety, and
cleanliness.
Investigate all accidents, untoward incidents and complaints relating to the Day services,
reporting to the Clinical Services and ensuring that appropriate action is taken in accordance
with agreed policies and procedures.
Take an active role in quality assurance initiatives and implementing resulting action plans.






Professional Development and Education








To identify training and development opportunities in conjunction with the Clinical Services
Manager and participate in personal training as may be necessary to meet the duties and
responsibilities of the post
Working closely with the senior clinical team, promote an environment conducive to the
development needs of staff and volunteers, and participate in the teaching of staff including
clinical staff, students and volunteers.
Ensure staff development is consistent with Kilbryde Hospice Nursing Strategy and national
guidance.
Take responsibility for the educational needs of directly managed team and, where
appropriate, work with the Lead Nurse, Community Services and Practice Educator to develop
programmes to meet their needs.
Co-ordinate areas of expertise within the team in conjunction with the wider clinical teams.
Oversee and participate in induction programmes for new staff and volunteers.
Ensure all staff and volunteers participate in mandatory update training.
Adjust scope of practice where necessary to improve patient care.


Adhere to relevant Code of Professional Conduct in the performance of clinical practice and
to be professionally accountable for all actions while on duty.
Keep up to date with current issues and changes in clinical practice, and ensure ongoing
personal development in line with professional requirements.
Participate in Personal Performance Development Review with the Lead Nurse, Community
Services to discuss own professional and managerial development and agree objectives in line
with hospice priorities

Hospital or when on Kilbryde Hospice business outside the office.
