How to Choose an Hu/SS Elective
The TCS department has three majors with three corresponding clusters of courses that fulfill the
minimum humanities and social science (hu/ss) requirement for the bachelor’s degree:
1. Culture, Arts and Media (CAM): How cultural practices and artifacts reflect and influence
developments in science and technology. (Media studies required for Integrated Digital Media.)
2. Science, Technology and Society (STS): STS includes disciplines like history, philosophy, literary
studies, and sociology. (STS majors take these courses to fulfill the “restricted” STS requirement.)
3. Sustainability, Globalization, and Environment (SEG): How critical areas of society, environment,
and globalization are interlinked. (SEG courses are generally “concentration” courses for SUE.)
Courses that fulfill the hu/ss requirement are listed under different prefixes: AH, CAM, EN, HI, MD,
MU, PL, PS, SEG, STS, and URB. The minimum requirement for most majors is 24 units (6 courses).
Two are the first-year writing courses (EXPOS-UA 1 and 2, or EXPOS-UA 4 and 9). The rest are
electives:
Level
Writing
2000, 3000, or 4000
Writing intensive (W) or not writing intensive
One elective must be writing intensive, and one must be at the 3000 or 4000 level. Be advised:
 Some majors have requirements beyond this minimum requirement.
 Some courses are offered in both W and non-W versions; if the course number has a W after it in
the official list of classes for that semester, it is offered as writing intensive.
Minors are offered as part of the three TCS majors:
Integrated Digital Media
 3 credits in Audio or Visual
Foundation Studio (DM
1113 or DM 1123)
 6 credits of DM at 2000
level
 6 credits of DM at 3000
level
Note: DM courses do not fulfill
Hu/SS requirements, but they
may be taken as free or
technical electives if your
advisor approves.
Science and Technology Studies
Sustainable Urban Environments
 16 credits
 15 credits
 STS 2004: Science,
 Two SUE core courses:
Technology, and Society or
HI 3034: History of NY’s Urban Infr.*
STS 3004: Seminar in
URB 2024W: The Design of Cities
Science and Technology
URB 2054W: Intro to Urban Policy*
Studies
URB 2044 Methods Studying Urban Env.
CE 4043: Sustainable Cities (not Hu/SS)
 Three other courses from the
list of STS electives. For fall
 Two concentration courses (reversed)
2014, see shaded courses on
 Note: requirements are being discussed

A full list of all STS and SUE courses is on the TCS departmental website

Cross-school Minors are available in a variety of subjects. These are not administered by TCS, however.
See the School of Engineering Registrar’s website for more information.
