LESSON- The living organisms and their surroundings.
Concepts:
 Habitat
 Adaptation
 Characteristics of living organisms
Introduction
HABITAT: A surrounding where an organisms live and flourish is called its habitat.
There are different habitatA. Terrestrial Habitat- Forests, Grass Lands, Deserts, Coastal & Mountain region.
B. Aquatic Habitat
A. Terrestrial Habitat- Land habitat i.e. plants and animals that live and flourish on
land. Terrestrial habitats are further of following types(1) Deserts- A place on land were there is scanty or no rainfall. We find following
plant and animals.
Desert Animals
Adaptive features of animals in deserts They have thick padded feet
 The water is stored in the body cells.
 They are nocturnal
 Hump stores food
Camel
Adaptive features of plants in deserts The leaves are modified into spines
 The stems are thick and fleshy
 Extensive root system
Desert Plant
(2) Mountain regions-The habitat that are normally very cold and windy. In some areas,
snow fall may take place in winters. We find following plants and animals
Adaptive features of animals in mountain regions They have long hair/fur on their body
 Lot of fat is deposited under the skin
Sheep
Adaptive features of plants in mountain regions
 Needle like leaves
 Drooping shapes of the tree
Goat
Mountain Trees
(2) Grass Lands- These are the places their lot of grasses are found. Predators like
lions and prey like deers are found.
Grass Lands
Predators- Animals that hunt other animals.
Lion
Prey- Animals that are hunted upon.
Deer
Aquatic Habitat-Water habitat. Plants and animals that are found in water bodies like
ponds, lakes, oceans etc.
Hydrilla
Water Lilly
Adaptive features of aquatic plants Flat, broad leaves
 Air filled roots and stens
 Waxy coating on leaves
Aquatic Animals
Adaptive features of aquatic animals Streamlined body
 Presence of gills
 Scales are present on the body
 Tail acts like a rudder
ADAPTATION: The presence of specific features or certain habitats that enable a plant
or an animal to live in its surroundings.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS
 All living things need food

They grow

They respire
 They respond to
stimuli
Touch me not


They excrete
They reproduce


They move or show body movements
They ultimately die
