English Course Descriptions
ENG 101 and Equivalent Courses
ENG 101E/101F Composition I Extended 1 and 2
ENG 101E/101F is a two-semester alternative to ENG 101 for students requiring
additional instruction in critical thinking, reading, and writing the thesis-driven
essay.
Students use the ENG 101 text and complete half of the ENG 101 curriculum each
semester. At the end of the second semester, scores from both semesters are
averaged to determine students’ ENG 101F grades.
Completion of both ENG 101E and 101F fulfills the ENG 101 requirement. S/U
grading for ENG 101E / Letter grading for ENG 101F
ENG 101 Composition I
English 101 is an evidence-based, writing intensive course designed to improve
critical thinking, reading, and writing proficiencies through guidance in writing the
thesis-driven essay. Students develop strategies for turning their experience,
observations, and analyses into evidence suitable for academic writing. Emphasis is
on writing the short, focused, concretely developed college paper.
ENG 113 Composition I for International Students
Course for non-native speakers of English. ENG 113 satisfies the ENG 101
requirement for international students. ENG 113 is the prerequisite for ENG 114; it
does not satisfy the prerequisite for ENG 102. Prerequisite: The prerequisite for
ENG 113 is met by one of the following:
Michigan placement test score of 76 or higher and a score of 40 or higher on
writing sample
iBT TOEFL score of 61 or higher with a 23 on the essay portion of the test
CBT TOEFL score of 173 with a Test of Written English score of 5 or higher
ENG 113E/113F Composition I for International Students Extended I
ENG 113E/113F is a two-semester sequence of ENG 113 designed for non-native
speakers of English whose placement exam indicates that they can successfully
complete college-level work in English when given additional instruction and
practice.
ENG 113E 3 elective credits. S/U grading. ENG 113F 3 credits. Letter grades.
Completion of ENG 113E/113F sequence fulfills UNLV requirements for ENG 113
Prerequisite: The prerequisite for ENG 113E/113F is met by one of the following:
iBT TOEFL of 60 and Test of Written English score of 4 or equivalent
CBT TOEFL of 167 with a Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency of 70

ENG 102 and Equivalent Courses
ENG 102 Composition II
English 102 builds upon the critical thinking, reading, and writing capabilities that
students developed in ENG 101. Students learn the processes necessary for
collecting and incorporating research material in writing. They learn how to
evaluate, cite, and document primary and secondary research sources, and how to
develop arguments and support them with sound evidence.
3 credits. Letter grades. Credits apply towards fulfillment of UNLV English
Composition requirement.
ENG 114 Composition II for International Students
Course for non-native speakers of English satisfies the ENG 102 requirement for
international students. Prerequisite: The prerequisite for ENG 114 is satisfactory
completion of ENG 113 or ENG 113F. (Note: ENG 114 courses are administered by
the English Language Center, CDC 111, 702-895-3925.)
