AP Chemistry 2011-12 Overview & Expectations
The AP chemistry class at Stuarts Draft High School will likely be a one semester (spring) class for the
2011-2012 school year. This will allow more time for labs and for AP exam preparation, BUT, it will
require some additional commitments from students. As in the past, there will be required summer
work, due at the beginning of school in August. This will entail at least 3 chapters in the text as well
as some additional research and/or project(s). Students who fail to complete the summer work on
time will be dropped from the class. Students must be committed to succeed in AP chemistry.
Depending on the student’s mastery of general chemistry, as well as his or her level of commitment,
the required summer work should take between 10 and 20 hours to complete.
In addition to the required summer work, throughout the first semester, there will be recommended
review work along with required monthly meetings. The schedule for the monthly meetings is still
under development, but will probably involve the activity schedule. In order to avoid conflicts with
important club meetings, please communicate which clubs you participate in. Additional meeting
opportunities will be provided for students with busy schedules. It will be necessary to meet with Mr.
Daw at least once per month in order to be prepared for the second semester. Depending on the
student’s mastery of general chemistry, as well as his or her level of commitment, the recommended
review work should take about an hour per week (or 6-9 hours per term) to complete.
The recommended review work will cover the first 11 chapters in the text which go over and expand
upon material covered in general chemistry. The assignments will include reading, note taking and
practice problems along with some labs and practice tests. The tentative plan is to do at least one lab
and one practice test each grading term (6 weeks). Whether or not a student participates in the labs
and/or completes the review work, he or she will be expected to have the related knowledge and
skills at the beginning of the second semester in January. Mr. Daw will be available morning, noon
and afternoon to meet with students individually or in small groups to answer questions and guide
students through the process.
When the AP chemistry class begins officially in January, the first topic will be kinetics & reaction
rates (the last topic in general chemistry, see outline), and move at a rapid pace. Students will be
expected to commit at least 2-3 hours per week, outside of class time, in order to succeed. Critical
thinking and independent problem solving will be emphasized. To the extent possible, the lab and
class work will resemble a college class. Students will work independently and in teams to explore
challenging concepts and solve complicated problems. Successful students will be prepared for the
academic rigors of competitive college programs in the fields of math, science and technology.
Please contact Mr. Daw with any questions or concerns (vdaw@augusta.k12.va.us or (540) 9467600). I look forward to working with you all over the next year!
