1. Executive Summary
This report was commissioned to provide an overview of the process in developing the
Basketeer, a Picnic Basket product idea. It includes the Product Innovation Cycle using
the CCCL Model. The five stages of the model are Idea Generation, Idea Screening,
Concept Testing, Feasibility Analysis and Product Development.
The report will provide insights of the various innovative ideas being shared and
discussed, the rationale on improving the picnic basket, as well as the shortcomings of
a current picnic basket. Improved features and materials used in the Basketeer, concept
testing of the mock-up model, product feasibility and factors to consider, cost and
product introduction strategy, minutes of meeting, reflections of the process of
developing the Basketeer and the business implication will also be covered in the
report.
The Basketeer includes features such as hot and cold compartments, adjustable bag
strap, wheels, exterior front and side pocket, interior compartment, detachable table &
cover, in-built Bluetooth speaker with USB ports, elastic tied down strap, umbrella
holder and handle.
Results from the concept testing have proved that the overall concept of the Basketeer
is possible and feasible. The report also investigates the fact that the concept testing
has its own limitations. Based on our limited skills and resources, certain features were
not foolproof for concept testing. The Basketeer was built from scratch and therefore the
sewing of strap might not be as strong compared to machine sewing. Therefore, it is not
recommended to compare the mock-up’s standard to the actual product.
2. Ideas Generation
2.1 Process & Documentation
Ideas of innovation were first shared among members seated in a circle, with a clear
direction of creating a product that would either help to bring convenience and
improvements to our lives or to solve a current problem. Most importantly, the main
objective was to create a multi-purpose product to cater to the different needs of all
walks of life.
Our group has come up with various ideas to improve on products that caused
inconvenience and to make lives easier for others. Firstly, we came up with the idea of
having a multi-purpose chopping board since the functions of the chopping board is
fairly limited. Next, we came up with the idea of having a flowerpot cum fish tank that
serves as a decoration and tackle the problem of dengue. In addition, we have also
came up with the idea of inventing a baby pram that can be used as a chalkboard for
interaction, and the idea of inventing a waterproof commode with brakes for easy
bathing of patients which bring convenience to nurses. Ultimately, we have decided to
focus on the idea of inventing a more convenient and efficient picnic basket. It all started
when the group members brought up the inadequacy of the current picnic baskets.
Usually, people would bring additional bags to separate and store their hot and cold
food. It is very inconvenient as a normal picnic basket does not have any hot or cold
compartments. Thus, resulting in consuming food that is no longer warm or chilled as
most of the people would rather pack everything into the basket.
Marina Barrage is one of the popular spots for a picnic. If one were to go there during
the afternoon, it is observed that the only spot left would be the one under the scorching
hot sun. Imagine sitting under the hot sun and there was only normal temperature
water, wouldn’t it be great to drink ice cold water instead? Furthermore, picnics are
often held in open areas and it would be inconvenient if a sudden downpour occurred.
Hence, we collate individual drawings of each and every member’s desired picnic
basket. In addition, due to the fact that Singapore is a tropical country, picnicking is a
habitual activity held commonly in parks, beaches or Marina Barrage. It was due to
these factors that we realised that there are many potential improvements that can be
made to the picnic basket as most of us enjoy picnics and seek ways to make the
basket better in order to bring convenience to other fellow people who enjoy picnics as
much as we do. All members had to sketch a design of how they want the basket to
look like and consists of, and after rounds of improvements, we took the best features of
each individual’s drawings and combined them together for the final design.
3. Ideas Screening
3.1 Process of Screening
We noted down everyone’s idea and evaluated the ideas based on the cost needed, the
usefulness of our proposed feature and the understanding of the product’s mechanism
for doing up a mock-up. For the chopping board idea, our proposed innovation is
combined with those existing features, but its heavy weight is impracticable. We
realised that even with vast innovations available, users are still sticking to the
conventional chopping board as the additional features does not help much even
though it could improve our lifestyle. For example, we wish to inbuilt ‘plate holder’ to clip
on to a plate, when one finish cutting the ingredient, it can be swiped into the plate. This
improved feature might not be needed as a plate could simply be place beside a chop
board too. Therefore, we decided to drop this idea.
For flower fish pot, we simply do not understand the mechanism behind in combining
the flower pot and the fish tank together. We wish to let the flower pot’s water to be filter
down to the fish tank to reuse it. However, we do not have much technical knowledge of
inventing the fish tank and if the proposed feature would be able to capture the aim of
reducing dengue mosquito breeding. For the baby pram and commode, it was
impossible for us because we do not have the resources and skills to to build it from
scratch, and it would be expensive to rent or buy one. We realised that there are a lot of
factors to consider, tied in with our limited resources and knowledge to build a prototype
which restricted us to make the final decision. After much consideration, our group have
decided on the picnic basket. The cost was within our budget as we sourced our
materials mainly from Daiso. It was also more feasible for us to do a prototype as we
have the technique to sew the compartments together and the knowledge of the theory
behind each material. For example, the insulating material that can keep food warm can
also keep food cold at the same time. We have come up with different features which
also proved to be useful for other purposes, such as using it as a bicycle basket and a
recyclable bag for groceries.
3.2 Rationale for Selecting the Final Choice
After the picnic basket was selected to be used for our project, we began to brainstorm
several features that could be implemented into the picnic basket. Firstly, some journey
to the picnic venues might be long, causing the warm and prepared food to turn cold
over time. Therefore, a hot and cold compartment would be incorporated into the interior
of the picnic basket.
Secondly, an adjustable compartment would be incorporated into the interior of the
picnic basket. This allows the user to choose the size of the compartment that they
want. This can potentially save space for the user as the items that you bring for a
picnic varies in size. By adjusting to the size that you need for a specific object, one can
fully utilise the space at the top area of the Basketeer.
Thirdly, exterior side pockets which take the shape of an envelope were designed into
the picnic basket. This pocket can conveniently be used for the placement of the picnic
mat. Bringing a picnic mat around is a chore, and sometimes people forget to bring it
out. Hence, by having a compartment specifically for it, it serves as a reminder for them
to bring their picnic mat along.
Following that, we thought of implementing an in-built speaker into the picnic basket as
well. People usually bring along their portable speaker for outdoor activities. However,
under some circumstances, people tend to forget to bring their speaker due to its small
size. This feature will therefore allow the user to amplify their music during picnic.
Lastly, we provide the convenience of an adjustable strap or wheels for the user to
move or carry the basket around despite the surface of the ground or the weight of the
basket itself. This provides easier handling of the cumbersome basket.
4. Product Description
The picnic basket would incorporate features of different products and is named as the
“Basketeer.” The FAB table can be found in Appendix 1. Taking into the account of
places where the basket will be used and brought to, the exterior of the basket will be
made of hard plastic due to its lightweightness, waterproof ability and sturdiness as
compared to wood and aluminium.
4.1 Features & Materials Used
Feature #1 - Exterior Front Pockets
As seen in Appendix 2, the Kate Spade’s Inside-Out-Pockets feature will be adapted
and modified to fit the needs of the consumer. This feature provides more storage
space and improves accessibility of taking smaller items out by eliminating the need to
rummage through the basket. The pockets would be measured and made to fit common
items such as A5 sized books, money, cards, pens and sunglasses. As for the money
and card slot, flaps will be added to secure them. In addition, with the increasing
popularity of the Inside-Out-Pockets bag among our target audience, this inspired
feature would further appeal to young people. These exterior pockets would be made of
the waterproof and abrasion-resistant material, Polyurethane Laminate fabric, to prevent
water from slipping in and scratches.
Feature #2 - Exterior Side Pockets
For smaller items that are unable to fit into the specific slots of the front pockets, the two
side pockets would be able to store any other items. The side pockets have flaps to
secure the smaller items from falling out. The exterior pockets would be made of the
waterproof material, Polyurethane Laminate fabric, so as to prevent water from slipping
in. However, to comply with the design, some of the front compartment will not be
covered with flaps to enhance the aesthetics appeal.
Feature #3 - Adjustable Bag Strap
By adapting the shoulder bag’s adjustable bag strap, the user will be able to adjust the
length of the bag to his/her height and convert it into a handbag or a shoulder bag.
Therefore, the consumer can either carry the basket with their hands or on their
shoulder. To reduce the muscle strain on the shoulder and hand, a cushioning pad
would be added to the shoulder strap. The lightweight and waterproof attributes of a
nylon strap help to achieve maximised comfortability and durability. The rainbow bag
strap which includes a metal buckle and rubber shoulder pad will further enhance the
overall aesthetics and functionality of the basket.
Feature #4 - Wheels
As most picnic and transport venues have smooth and flat surfaces, four wheels will be
placed at the four corners at the base of the basket. The wheels enable users to pull or
push the basket without much effort as compared to hand-carrying, especially when the
basket is heavy. As there will be four wheels to support the overall weight of the basket,
plastic locking casters will be used as they do not rust, able to lock the wheels and are
capable of supporting heavy weights and definitely, able to support the load in the
basket.
Feature #5 - Detachable Table & Cover
The table is easily set up by unfolding the legs of the table, and it will be put to other
uses such as to act as a lid to cover the basket and also to store utensils. The tablecum-basket cover will consist of three compartments with an in-built elastic strap to
secure fragile plates in the middle compartment. The table will be made of hard plastic
to withstand minimal pressure of its load (utensils, dishes, plates etc.) and prevent
damages from impacts such as kicking and dropping.
Feature #6 - In-built Bluetooth Speaker with USB Ports
This feature would be combined with the table. The speaker would be built into the legs
of table while the USB ports would be located at the side of the table. Users can choose
between amplifying their music via the Bluetooth or USB Port. The power of the
speakers can be run on either the detachable and rechargeable battery or AA batteries,
which is readily available. In addition, a silicon USB port cover is designed to prevent
water from slipping in.
Feature #7 - Elastic Tie Down Strap
To have extra storage or store items that are unable to fit in the basket such as kites,
the in-built elastic tie down strap will enable consumer to place and secure their stuff on
top of the basket.
Feature #8 - Umbrella Holder & Handle
Combining the feature of the umbrella holder and handle to move the basket, the
umbrella holder is able to hold any types of portable umbrella with the strong in-built
clamp, which reduces the trouble of holding an umbrella for shade. The grip of the
handle is ergonomically designed to fit the human hand (Appendix 3). This feature
would be made of Carbon Fiber as it is the lightest, and is durable, compared to
aluminium and steel. The handle will be covered with softex grip to provide a softer and
better grip.
Feature #9 - Interior Compartments
The detachable divider maximises interior space efficiency by allowing the consumer to
organise their items by dividing the compartments horizontally and stacking items
vertically with the divider to maximise space.
Feature #10 - Hot & Cold Compartments
There will be two different enclosed compartments located in the basket for storing hot
and cold items which allows consumers to enjoy their food as it preserves the freshness
and temperature of their food. Compartments will be made of aluminium-coated
polypropylene styrofoam to provide rigidness and thermal insulation.
5. Concept Testing
5.1 Weight
Objective: To find out if the basket can take the weight of 15kg when being lifted up.
Materials: Basketeer, magazines and books, weighing machine and handle strap.
Procedure
1. Weigh the weights of the empty basket and Sean (Our group member).
2. Filled up the baskets with books. (Refer to Appendix 4)
3. Use the handle strap to lift up the basket filled with magazines and books. (Refer to
Appendix 5)
4. Hold it for 5 minutes.
5. Calculate the weight of Basketeer by subtracting the empty basket and Sean’s weight
measured earlier on in Step 1.
Observation
The result obtain is shown in the equation below.
(Total Weight) - (Initial Weight) = (Weight of the Load)
71kg
-
55kg
=
16kg
Conclusion
From the equation, it is able to withstand 16kg of books and magazines, one kilogram
heavier than the stipulated weight of 15kg. Thus, it is suitable for picnic as it is able to
carry the weight of commonly used picnic items such as food, plate and many more.
5.2 Wheels
Objective: To find out if the wheels are able to work and steer smoothly by applying
force directly to the fully-filled Basketeer.
Materials: Basketeer, 4 wheels, books, magazines, tape and super glue.
Procedure
1. Use the super glue to glue the wheels to the Basketeer and wait for it to dry.
2. Add the tape to secure the wheels firmly to the Basketeer.
3. Add in books and magazines into the Basketeer.
4. Apply force to move the Basketeer and record the observation.
Observation
The basket is able to move smoothly. In addition, we also use the handle to drag the
Basketeer and the handle is also able to withstand the weight of it. This shows that the
wheels are able to support the maximum weight of 15kg of the basket.
Conclusion
The wheels are able to steer and work perfectly. Thus, making it suitable for picnic
uses. The basketeer could also be further improved when we add bigger and wider
wheels to increase stability due to lower centre of gravity, as compared to the small
wheels. However, considering the overall design will not be appealing as Basketeer
aims to look fashionable with the Kate Spade inspired front pocket, sticking to smaller
sizes wheels will be the better choice since it works just as fine.
5.3 Hot and Cold Compartments
Objective: To find out if the hot compartment is able to keep the warm food outside the
bacteria growth danger zone of 5 to 60 degree Celsius for 3 hours. Also, to find out if
the cold compartment is able to keep the food chilled at below room temperature of 25
degree Celsius for 3 hours.
Materials: Basketeer, 2 tupperware food containers, ice, boiling water, laboratory
thermometer, clock
Procedure
1. Pour boiling water and ice into a container each.
2. Measure using thermometer and record the temperature.
3. Place the hot and cold containers into the hot and cold compartments, respectively.
4. Let the containers rest in the compartments for 3 hours.
5. Take them out and measure the temperature. Record the results.
Observation
After 3 hours, the temperature of the boiling water dropped from 100 to 61 Degree
Celsius and the temperature of the cold water increased to 16 Degree Celsius from the
initial 0 Degree Celsius.
Conclusion
The hot and cold compartments are safe to use for picnic because the hot compartment
is able to keep the cooked food at a temperature above the danger zone for 3 hours.
The cold compartment is also able to keep the cold food or drink chilled for 3 hours. To
further reduce the temperature increased for the cold food, consumers could place
plastic ice packs in the cold compartment.
6. Feasibility Analysis of Product
6.1 Market Feasibility
Firstly, it is important to identify target market and direct the launching of Basketeer to
them. The target market we have identified will be from aged 18 to 50 years old as this
is suitable for family usage too. Hence, the target audience for this product would be
mainly for people who frequently go for picnics. Example of these target audience
includes teenagers and families. We will be mainly focusing on the teenagers and
working adults who love bringing their partners or friends to picnic and enjoy the nature
scenery. While there are competitors who sell picnic basket as their product, these
competitors will not pose much of a threat as the Basketeer is able to provide much
more features and benefits to the consumers as compared to a typical picnic basket for
a relatively reasonable price.
6.2 Resource Feasibility
The Basketeer can definitely be made with the current technology level such as the
attachment of the adjustable shoulder straps and wheels to the basket itself. Such
materials can be easily obtained from wholesalers who distribute such parts. The
primary feature of the Basketeer which is the Hot and Cold compartments can also be
created and incorporated into the basket as well. This can be seen from the success of
bags that have Thermal-lined storage compartment to keep food warm or cold for a
longer period of time. Thermal lined is having coated with regular wool or cotton on one
side to form a thin layer of insulation, improving the duration whereby food is kept warm
or cold.
6.3 Financial Feasibility
The estimated production cost is $105 in total. However, we will try to make the selling
price of the product at a more affordable price for consumers to purchase it. Hence, it
will be priced at an estimated selling price of $150. The price of a typical picnic basket
ranges from $50 to $350. By setting our price at $150 when the Basketeer have much
more functions than a typical picnic basket, it will definitely capture the attention of
consumers to purchase it as it is valued for money.
7. Product Development
7.1 Description of Development History
Before we started putting the product together, each of us first submitted a sketch of
what the Basketeer would look like and consist of. From there, we picked the best
drawing and started getting materials to make the product. (Refer to Appendix 6 for the
sketch of the Basketeer). The group met up at Tampines 1 and managed to get
materials from Daiso and Howard’s Storage World. For materials such as cloth, buttons
and bag straps, we went to Spotlight at Plaza Singapura. As we followed the sketch
closely, we realized that there were some occurring issues with the product, such as
having insufficient space to store plates and other miscellaneous items. From there, we
were able to improve the features and functions of the ‘Basketeer’ while we were
working on the product, by incorporating a portable table as the cover of the Basketeer,
that can store plates and utensils.
Our initial product was just an ordinary basket. From there, we decided to split the
basket into two segments, one segment to store hot and cold items, and the other
segment to store other items such as umbrellas, bottled drinks etc. We added styrofoam
layerings into the larger compartment which was further split into two segments (As
seen in Appendix 7), to store hot and cold food items. Following that, we continued to
wrap a silver cloth material, which acts as both an insulator and has thermal properties,
around the styrofoam compartments to ensure that the heat or cold air would not
escape from the box.
Next, we hand-sewn and put together the pockets and compartments placed outside of
the Basketeer by using a material that is waterproof, in case of bad weather outdoors.
These compartments/pockets at the sides are made to fit small miscellaneous items,
such as napkins, earpieces, or any other last minute items to be placed inside. On the
other hand, the larger compartment at the front was made to hold items such as pens,
sunglasses, as well as books.
Following that, we have also sewn and added adjustable buckles onto the straps of the
Basketeer. It was at this point that we realized that it would be more convenient for
users if the Basketeer had wheels. As such, we incorporated wheels onto the Basketeer
through using strong tape to stick the wheels onto the bottom part of the basket, so as
to allow users to have an easier time if they have stored too many items into the
Basketeer.
Lastly, as it was impossible to manually install an in-built Bluetooth speaker with USB
slots into the Basketeer, all we could do was to paste an image of the actual speaker
onto the sides of the portable table where the actual speaker and USB slots would be
located. We have also made use of a monopod to act as an umbrella holder to shield
users from strong sun rays, by securing the monopod with ropes around the side handle
of the Basketeer.
In conclusion, above is a summary of what we did to put together the Basketeer with the
existing materials that we could attain.
7.2 Reflection of the Process of PDI
Based on the CCCL model there are the five stages that we had to go through in which
we have gotten our final product which is the Basketeer.
The first stage is Idea Generation where all of us came out with different ideas and we
narrowed down to the a few that is the most practical and has multi purpose functions.
As all of us had different products in mind initially, we had different products that we
wanted to work on. Hence, we decided to do a product that we could easily attain
materials for the mock-up. We used the SCAMPER approach to see which product we
could work on, an ultimately, the picnic basket was a product we could work on. A
combination approach was used to find out other relevant features we could put into the
picnic basket, since the current existing one is too simple and inconvenient for many
without much compartments.
The second stage is Idea Screening. Through problem analysis by some of our group
members, and the people around them, it is evident that they were facing problems
when going for a picnic, as the current picnic basket does not help much apart from
storing food. This is when we had decide on the final product, which is to work on a
multi-purpose picnic basket. We added ideas and features of what we wanted in our
‘Basketeer’, bearing in mind the cost, usefulness, materials and also how the products
works. This is where we had to consider what a consumer wants and needs when they
go picnic outdoors on a typical day. The classification of the ‘Basketeer’ is under the
improvements and revisions to existing products as it has additional modifications made
to it.
In the third stage of the CCCL Model, we have tested that the Basketeer is able to
withstand 16kg of items placed into it. This shows that users can have a peace of mind
when they bring a handful of things along for a picnic as the Basketeer would be able to
withstand the weight. In addition, even if the Basketeer is too heavy to be carried, users
can use the wheels function to drag the basket around for convenience. To add on,
being able to insulate items for up to 3 hours (Whereby within 3 hours of concept
testing, the 100°C water in the hot compartment dropped to 61°C while the 0°C water in
the cold compartment increased to 16°C). This therefore shows that users can relax and
enjoy themselves without the fear of their food items melting, getting warmed up or
getting cooled while they are out under the hot sun. Thus, this acts as a supporting
factor that businesses or consumers would be keen with our product since there is
currently no product that provides the same convenience and functions as our
Basketeer.
The fourth stage is feasibility analysis, where we analyzed on the product’s profitability
and compatibility in the marketplace. It is apparent that Singaporeans prefer things that
are multi-functional, that will bring convenience for them everywhere they go. Moreover,
in Singapore, bonding and family ties are highly valued. Picnics are one the most
common activities that is done every week to promote bonding. Since the Basketeer is a
multi purpose basket, and has a lot of benefits for the users and will allow the Basketeer
to get the upper hand to target these people and attract them in order to get sales. The
Basketeer will be the new and improved replacements of the current picnic basket that
exist, hence, it would be compatible for users as it is not hard to use the Basketeer,
since they do not need to learn anything new but just simply enjoying the additional
features and benefits that this Basketeer provides.
In the final stage, which is product development, we were able to put together materials
that we have obtained to create the Basketeer. We have made a few changes from the
original sketch, such as adding wheels to the Basketeer for users to drag and pull.
These wheels also aim to provide a higher level of convenience to users, especially
when the basket is too heavy to be carried. In addition, there would be other colour
schemes of the Basketeer in the near future to meet consumers’ tastes. As of current,
we have decided to use a sky blue basket paired with green compartments in order to
give users a more ‘natural’ and ‘picnic-ky’ feel. This product is currently technically
feasible to produce as the cost and the materials used are affordable and widely
available.
7.3 Business Implications
When starting up a business, based on a new product such as the Basketeer, there are
some important factors to look out for. Examples of these factors include main
competitors and also intellectual properties. It is important that our ideas for the
Basketeer should not fully clash with competitors’ existing products, and that the
features that we are incorporating are not and will not breach any laws. This means that
thorough research must be done in order for the the company to go ahead with the
plans of the product development.
To add on, the features of the Basketeer must be safe when handled by a child to
prevent injuries. As of current, the only threat to a child would be the umbrella holder as
it could injure children who could hit into it while running around. However, this problem
can easily be solved with the adjustable option of the holder. When children are playing,
it would be best to retract the holder so that they would not hit into it. As such, this
makes the Basketeer more suitable for family occasions.

be combine and used for other uses such as a table and a fish
tank.

tank beneath the pot to prevent mosquitoes from entering the
water tank. The water from the fish tank will then be pumped
upwards to water the plant.
