Kindergarten Assignment Sheet # 25
Begin: 3/10 *Due: 3/24
*Have a GREAT spring break!!!! We will see you all in TWO weeks!!!!
NEW ASSIGNMENT - I would like for you to start having your child write in a
journal several times each week. Use any type of paper/notebook you wish, this is to be
kept at home. Let your child pick any topic they want, or give them choices. Topics
could include: My favorite animal, What I want to be when I grow up, What I did today,
My best friend, What I like to eat, etc. Just have your child write 2 or 3 sentences, with
you helping them to spell any words they need help with (which, at this point, may be
most of them!). Be very encouraging with your child about this. Let them know it is for
fun, that they can go back years from now and read what they used to think about certain
subjects. Don’t forget to date each entry! Please be consistent. Confidence in writing
comes only with continual practice. Don’t miss this opportunity to help develop your
child’s literacy & creativity!
Phonics/Handwriting:
special sounds squ, thr / sight word says / Refer to pages
84 & 89 of Handbook for Reading.
Day 1:
o Letters & Sounds K, pages 175-176.
o Writing with Phonics K5, pages 155-156.
o Introduce sight word “says”. Add to flashcards to review daily.
o I Do Read, Book 4, pages 8-11. Point out quotation marks and explain that we
use them to show that these are speaker’s exact words.
o Instruction – squ as in squeak. Demonstrate sounding out special sounds in the
words before having child do it. Have child circle special sounds and mark vowels
in words: (Point out that the u is not marked as a vowel since it always follows
the q. It is circled as part of the special sound.)
squeal
squint
squish
o pick 5 or 6 special sound blend flashcards to show to your child one at a time for
him to name the sound then tell a word that contains it. Continually try to think of
games to make these reviews fun. Give an M & M each time child gets one right,
or hide blends around the room and set timer for 30 seconds to find each one. If
they get the sound wrong, hide it again, if they get it right, place in a “correct”
pile!
o Writing with Phonics K5, page 157.

Phonemic Awareness: (understanding the sounds from which words are made)

Identify all letters learned in the initial and ending position. Place lettercards
in front of your child. Use the word list and have your child hold up the card
which represents the sound he hears at the beginning or ending of each word.

Identify middle vowel sound in a word - Give your child lettercards a, e, i, o,
and u. Dictate the following words and have your child respond by raising the
correct lettercard for the middle sound heard in the word. (Stress the vowel so that
your child clearly hears the middle sound.) spend, hint, stop, grab, dent, flush,
spin, romp, plan, dusk
 Rhyme – Dictate 2 words to your child. If the 2 words rhyme, your child should
say yes. If the 2 words do not rhyme, your child should say no. If the 2 words
rhyme, ask your child to say a word that rhymes with the word pair: girl - squirrel,
fox – fix, comb – home, mitten – kitten, sand – send, luck - truck
 Writing from Dictation: Use lined paper. Pronounce a word from the word list
saying each sound separately and have your child write the letter for each sound
on his lined paper. Have your child blend the sounds together to read the word.
Continue this process by writing a phrase and a sentence.
***** Please remind your child to write lowercase letters unless it is the first
letter in the first word of a sentence or the beginning letter of a name
word. *
Optional:
1. Spell -O: Make a word chart of some of the words from the word list.
Using index cards, make lettercards for each consonant and vowel
learned to date. Shuffle the cards and place them on the table. Mom and
child draw 4 to 5 cards, look at the letters, and try to spell one of the
words written on the chart. Remind your child that a word must have a
vowel. The first one who can arrange the letters to spell one of the words
on the chart and can read it correctly earns a point and the game begins
again. If no one can spell a word, each player in turn draws a card until
someone can make and read a word.
Bible/Character: Responsibility
In our Five in a Row story last week, Papa Piccolo made a decision to accept the
responsibility of raising the kittens. This decision took time, sacrifice, and a weight of
responsibility. Matthew 25:35-40 conveys the idea of taking care of the least of these,
and could be used in a discussion of caring for those in need. There are a variety of Bible
references regarding the “fatherless” and how to care for them. Psalm 68:5 says to sing
praises to God who is the “father of the fatherless.” A good concordance will reveal
different facets of the heart of God and His concern and protection for orphans. In the
New Testament James 1:27 says that the care of widows and orphans constitutes true
religion.
Memory Verse:
Matthew 25: 35 – “for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I
was thirsty and you gave Me drink.”
Critical Thinking:
None!
Math: Complete Saxon Math pages 112-116.

I would like to suggest teaching your child to play the actual game
of dominoes. It requires the repetitiveness of higher counting, and
being able to recognize multiples of five. And if they are not sure,
just have them count by fives to see if it is a multiple!
Continue to review counting money, and making addition
sentences with your child, using objects and numbers.
Please have your child write numbers 1-40 on a sheet of paper,
using a two finger space between each number, and bring to class
in their homework folder for me to check.
Read Aloud: Please read a rhyme, pattern/repetition, or concept book to your child
each day. Also include good quality children’s literature from these categories; concept
books (alphabet, opposites, numbers, colors, seasons…) picture books, easy readers,
poetry, chapter books and books that build and develop character. Encourage your child
to relate the story to any personal experiences, to recall their favorite parts and to
sequence the events in the story in order. Remember to read at least 10 minutes each day.
Sharing: For the week of 3/22 or 3/23 your child may draw or paint a picture that
shows what they did over spring break! Help your child to think of 3 things to say about
the item. Mrs. Wilson’s note: You may have them use the class journal for this
assignment.
