Somatic and Special Senses Brochure
You and your partner will create a brochure that will take your audience (7th and 8th graders) on a tour
of the five senses. You can create your brochure using paper and pencils or it can be made using a
computer. This brochure will count as a test grade. Some of the work will be completed in class, but a
majority of the work will need to be completed on your own time.
You brochure must include the following

Create a map of the tongue (like the one we did in class) only this time the map will be
presented as a menu from a restaurant or regions of the world that have specific types of food.
Have fun with this, get creative!
o E.x. Salty would not be listed as salty, it would be listed as corn beef (because it contains
a lot of salt)

What is anosmia? How common is it?
Answer the following scenario: When you first enter a coffee shop, the aroma of fresh coffee is
wonderfully strong and full-bodied. After several minutes of waiting in line, the odor is barely
noticeable. Has something happened to the coffee or has something happened to you? Explain
your answer.
Create a scenario which the answer would elicit the explanation of the olfactory pathway. Your
explanation of the olfactory pathway should be able to be understood by a 7th or 8th grader.
o E.x. My roommate does not clean her room and now the stench of decay is coming from
her room. How am I able to detect and identify the odor?
