Aziz 1 Shekib Ahmad Aziz Ahmad Mr. Tenorio Period 3 Economics January 22th 2012 Third World vs. Modern World Every day in our daily life we hear the political terms “Third world country” and “Modern World” but some of us have no idea what it means. "Third World countries" are all the other countries, today often used to roughly describe the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. An example would be Venezuela, North Korea, Mali, Pakistan and Afghanistan. “Modern World” usually describes more developed countries with modern technology. For example, United States of America, United Kingdom, and Russia. We people that live in developed countries do not realize how difficult it is to be in the third world country. People in the third world have health problems, unemployment, and limited access to education. There is a huge difference between the modern world countries and developed countries. One of the problems third world countries face is access to a good health care which leads to a high mortality rate. For example, people in Afghanistan live forty four years on average while in Untied States of America average citizen live seventy nine years. People in United States live about twice on average then in Afghanistan, which is a big difference for the countries in 21st century. Aziz 2 Education is another factor that we could compare countries and decide whether they are modern or third world country. For example, in United States about ninety nine percent of population can read and write which is pretty close to the whole population which means the. While in Afghanistan only about forty percent of the whole population know how to read and write which means that the country does not provide opportunities for the people to get educated. Also this means it is almost impossible for the country to progress and make innovation if more than half of the population does not know how to read or write. Safety is one of the biggest aspects that everyone is looking toward when they are trying to find a place to live. Most of the third world countries barely finish a war or still in the war. As an example Afghanistan has been in the war for the past thirty years. While in the United States even in schools they have securities which shows how much government cares about their citizens and education. Why a country does become a third world country or what causes it to become below the modern standards? The most common facts that countries face are wars, corruption, and spending money on unbeneficial goods. Wars are one of the most important causes that make a country fall behind the standards. Anarchy that goes during the war in the country destroy every chance of the country’s progress and achieving peace and stabilization that would make country’s economy work. Also war need a lot of money and spending money on military is causing reducing their spending’s on education, and safety. Aziz 3 Corruption is dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery. As an example Russia is a modern world country but because they have a lot of corruption country’s economy goes down and safety and education of the country is decreasing as well. Making a wrong decision is also a big mistake that some countries make. As an example North Korea spends about twenty five percent of their annual income on military while their military is one of the best military in the world their education and health care is way behind then other countries. HIV and malaria is one of the biggest killers and takes thousands of live each year. IF they would spend at least five percent less than what they spend now on military they would live about five years longer says “Marten Curial” British Medic. To sum up, we learned that most of the modern world countries’ citizens live as twice as much as the people in third world countries. More than half of the population in the third world countries doesn’t know how to read or write. Living in the third world countries isn’t safe because of the anarchy that goes through the country. Also we learned why those countries fall behind. One of the reasons in was because the country constantly spends money for weapons. Also corruption is one way that country falls behind the standards because the money goes not where it have to go and final reason is that country spend money on the thing that are not necessary.
