WPACO Information
Western PA Christian Orators (WPACO) is a parent-led coop specializing in speech
and debate. Currently we have many families with both beginner and intermediate
level classes, for students from age 4 to 18. Fees for the 2015-2016 school year are
$35 for the first student, $15 for the second, $10 for the third. $5 for all additional
children including nursery.
WPACO participates in the National Christian Forensics and Communication
Association (NCFCA) sanctioned tournaments. We therefore adhere to NCFCA's
debate and public speaking format and guidelines. You can view NCFCA's goals and
guidelines at www.ncfca.org. Some of our students also participate in Stoa
tournaments. You can view their goals and guidelines at www.stoausa.org.
Speech students are instructed in the basics of presentation style as well as content
for the various categories as outlined in the NCFCA homeschool forensics league.
These categories include: Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo
Interpretation, Impromptu, Extemporaneous, Original Oratory, Persuasive, and
Expository. We also cover the importance of audience analysis, and basics in writing
and presenting an effective speech. Students are given ample opportunity for class
participation and practice on multiple levels. They also have the opportunity to
memorize and present their selections in homeschool practice tournaments held
both locally and in various locations throughout the year.
We teach students Team Policy Debate and Lincoln-Douglas(values)Debate. During
class instruction they learn theory while practicing research and organization of
materials. They develop affirmative and negative arguments for the NCFCA
resolution for that academic year. Teams then have opportunities to participate in
practice tournaments with each other as well as with other homeschooled students in
various locations throughout the year.
Our Beliefs
We believe the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, to be the only inspired,
inerrant and infallible Word of God, and the final authority for faith and life. (2
Timothy 3:16)
We believe that there is one God, eternally existent, in one essence, yet three coequal persons, the Trinity: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. (Eph. 4:4-6, Matt. 28:19,
John 14:9-11, John 15:26).
Our Vision
The Vision of Western Pennsylvania Christian Orators is to assist home-educating
parents as they endeavor to develop sound communication skills in Christian
students so that they can effectively communicate their ideas, thoughts, and beliefs,
thereby positively impacting both the body of Christ and their culture for the cause of
Christ.
We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ (Matt.16:16, Mark 8:27-29, Luke
9:18-20), His virgin birth (Luke 1:29-35), His sinless life (1John 3:5), His miracles
(Acts 2:22, John 3:2), His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood
(Romans 3:25, 1 Tim 2:5-6, 1 Peter 1:18-19), His bodily resurrection (1Cor.15:3-5),
His ascension (Luke 24-50-53, Acts 1:9-11) and His personal return in power and
glory (Acts 1:11, John 14:2-3).
We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men: the saved to eternal life, and the
unsaved to judgment and everlasting punishment (John 5:28-29, John 5:24)
We believe that all men are sinful by nature, and that saving faith is the gift of God
given to man by grace and received only by personal trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
(Romans 3:22-24)
We believe that we should live in such a manner as to not bring reproach upon our
Savior and Lord (Matthew 5:16, Philippians 1:27)
We believe it is our obligation as believers to witness by life and word to the truths of
the Gospel and proclaim these truths to all mankind (Matt.28:19-20).
We believe that God has called us as His people to glorify Him by our lives and our
words. Because of this goal, we seek to learn to address life's issues from a biblical
worldview in a manner that glorifies God, within a context of Christian love.
We believe that we as parents have been given the responsibility by God to educate
our children throughout every aspect of their lives (Deut. 6:4-9)
