Research Project
Introduction!
Section 7.1
7.2
7.3
Introduction / Overview:
-
Each of you will be in a group assigned to research one of nine revolutionaries,
an individual who played a major role in the dramatic changes of the American
Revolution.
a) George Washington
f) Crispus Attucks*
b) Thomas Jefferson
g) Phillis Wheatley*
c) John Hancock
h) Deborah Sampson
d) Paul Revere
i) John Adams
e) Samuel Adams
-
Each of you will research one of the following three sets of research
questions for your revolutionary and develop it into a multi-paragraph
composition of at least 5 paragraphs in total. Your composition will include an
introduction paragraph, a conclusion paragraph, and at least 3 body paragraphs full
of specific evidence from your research.
1. BEFORE: What were their lives like before the American Revolution? How
did their life experiences before the American Revolution prepare them to be
revolutionaries? (pre 1775)
2. DURING: What were their lives like during the American Revolution? How
did they contribute to this historic event? (1775-1783)
3. AFTER: What were their lives like after the American Revolution? How
were the rest of their lives influenced by the outcome of the American
Revolution?* (post 1783)
* Note: Crispus Attucks died in the Boston Massacre right before the American
Revolution, and Phillis Wheatley died right after the American Revolution. Thus, if you
are assigned one of these two, your group will consist of only two people and will not
include research on this person’s life after the revolution.
-
It is up to you and your group to decide who tackles each set of questions. Each of
you will then use the attached list of sources to find detailed evidence you can use to
answer your research questions. You can whisper with your group members to help
each other learn about your revolutionary and find evidence, but it is ultimately up
to you to develop a high-quality research paper on your set of research questions.
-
You will need to find enough evidence for at least 10 research note cards. Your
note cards should look like this.
[Your initials]
[sub-topic]
[Source#]
[List bulleted, paraphrased evidence in shorthand here]
-
Don’t lose your note cards! They are essential to your research and will be part
of your final grade.
Glossary:
1. Parliament: the British legislative assembly; like the Roman Senate; shared
power over the British Empire with the British monarch, King George III, just like
our US Congress shares power with the president today
2. Continental Congress: the emergency legislative assembly that the colonies set
up in 1774 in order to make sure their concerns about England were being
addressed; contained representatives from all thirteen colonies
3. Declaration of Independence: the famous document written by Thomas
Jefferson and signed by members of the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 that
officially announced the colonies’ break-up with England
4. Articles of Confederation: our country’s first constitution (or major set of
laws) completed by the Continental Congress in 1777; kept the central US
government very weak, especially in terms of the ability to tax and use the
military, so was replaced by the US Constitution in 1788
5. U.S. Constitution: our country’s major set of laws, established in 1788 to replace
the weaker Articles of Confederation
6. Bill of Rights: the first 10 amendments (or changes) to the US Constitution,
added in 1789 under the leadership of James Madison; these guaranteed basic
rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from cruel or unjust
punishment, etc
7. Militia: a group of ordinary citizens that take up weapons to fight as soldiers in
an emergency
