7th Grade Health Make-Up Work: Nutrition Day 4 Warm-Up: Write in your binder 1. What are qualities of people with healthy self-esteem? 2. What does it mean to have a positive body image? 3. What types of exercise do you enjoy? Why do you enjoy it? 4. Are most teens obsessed with their body image? 5. Do you agree that in order to be loved by others, you have to love yourself first? Notes: What Influences a Person's Self-Esteem? 1. Puberty and Development: Our body goes through many changes during puberty. These changes, combined with wanting to feel accepted by our friends, means it can be tempting to compare ourselves with others. The trouble with that is, not everyone grows or develops at the same time or in the same way. 2. Media Images and Peer Pressure: Our tweens and early teens are a time when we become more aware of celebrities and media images — as well as how our peers look and how we fit in. We might start to compare ourselves with other people or media images ("ideals" that are frequently airbrushed). All of this can affect how we feel about ourselves and our bodies even as we grow into our teens. 3. Families and School: Some parents or coaches might be too focused on looking a certain way or "making weight" for a sports team. Family members might struggle with their own body image or criticize their kids' looks. People also may experience negative comments and hurtful teasing about the way they look from classmates and peers. Although these often come from ignorance, sometimes they can affect body image and self-esteem. Self-Esteem Scale – Confidential (Do not turn in nor share with class): Instructions: Please indicate how strongly you agree or disagree with each statement with one of the following responses: Strongly Agree Agree Disagree Strongly Disagree 1. On the whole, I am satisfied with myself. 2. At times I think I am no good at all. 3. I feel that I have a number of good qualities. 4. I am able to do things as well as most other people. 5. I feel I do not have much to be proud of. 6. I certainly feel useless at times. 7. I feel that I'm a person of worth, at least on an equal plane with others. 8. I wish I could have more respect for myself. 9. All in all, I am inclined to feel that I am a failure. 10. I take a positive attitude toward myself. Scoring: Items 1,3,4,7,10 are scored as follows: Strongly Agree = 4 points Agree = 3 points Disagree = 2 points Strongly Disagree = 1 point Items 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 are reverse scored: “Strongly Disagree” = 4 points “Disagree” = 3 points “Agree” = 2 points “Strongly Agree” =1 points Sum scores for all ten items Higher scores indicate higher self-esteem. Notes: 6 Tips for Improving Body Image 1. Recognize that your body is your own, no matter what shape or size it comes in. Try to focus on how healthy your body is and the things it can do, not what's wrong with it. 2. Identify which aspects of your appearance you can realistically change and which you can't. Humans, by definition, are imperfect. It's what makes each of us unique and original! “Real people aren't perfect and perfect people aren't real (they're usually airbrushed!)". 3. If there are things about yourself that you want to change and can, do this by making goals for yourself. For example, if you want to get fit, make a plan to exercise every day and eat healthy. Meeting a challenge you set for yourself is a great way to boost self-esteem! 4. When you hear negative comments coming from within, tell yourself to stop. Try to focus on what's unique and interesting about yourself. 5. Try building your self-esteem by giving yourself three compliments every day. Every evening think of thigs in your day that really gave you pleasure. It can be anything from the way the sun felt on your face, the sound of your favorite band, or the way someone laughed at your jokes. Focus on the positive aspects of your life! 6. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, counselor, teacher, coach, or relative.
