Overview: Brigham Young University has a small grant to create videos showcasing different health professionals and their interaction with other professionals. These videos will be used to educate students in an Interprofessional Education (IPE) course. The first video to be produced will highlight professionals in Public Health. b. Background: Fragmented efforts within health systems and between health workers can compromise health outcomes. A coordinated approach to health and healthcare starts with educating students on how to work together with several professions. According to the World Health Organization: “It is no longer enough for health workers to be professional. …health workers…need to be interprofessional.” Interprofessional education (IPE) is an “innovative strategy” in which “students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.” c. The Interprofessional Course: Brigham Young University is beginning an Interprofessional Education course, that will start in Fall 2014. This course is designed to educate different healthcare professionals together at the same time. Current educational practices educate professions in silos (nurses with nurses, public health with public health, etc.), yet expect graduates to move into the workforce and work on interprofessional teams. The course at BYU will include students in the following programs: Master of Public Health, Dietetic Interns, Nursing, Clinic-Lab Science, Chaplaincy for Healthcare, and Pre-professionals (e.g. pre-med, pre-dental, etc.). The course will cover a wide array of topics including: an introduction to different professions and what they do, teamwork, dealing with conflict, communications, etc. d. The Video Project/Grant: As part of the course, videos will be created to showcase “real-life” professions (what they do, where they work, etc.) and show these professionals working with other professional. A small grant has been awarded to create these videos. The first video will focus on public health professionals. As future funding is available other videos will be created for nursing, dietetics/nutritionists, clinical lab science, and hopefully more. e. What We Need.
