At its meeting on April 21, 2015 the Leadership Vision Team of
the Presbytery of Lackawanna, upon the recommendation of the
Synod Transitional Executive and Synod Stated Clerk, took
action to appoint a Transitional Head of Staff to provide
executive leadership, oversight and staff supervision for the
Presbytery of Lackawanna. The Rev. Virginia Miner agreed to
accept these responsibilities effective immediately. The Rev.
Joan and David Cross would like to thank their church family
for the ongoing support and all of the calls and cards, and
thanks to those who have helped in anyway throughout Jacks
illness and since his passing.
Special thanks to Pastor Ken for his many visits and continual
pastoral care.
Joan will be relocating to Arizona in the near future and she will
be missed. Best wishes and much love will go with her as she
makes this transition.
Pastor Ken would like to express his thanks for all of the cards
and phone calls received during his recent recovery time at
home. A thank you to the Prayer Shawl group for the shawl
he received.

The stories of Abraham and Sarah in
and Sarah as a part of Gods providential care for all
Genesis are foundational in the
people. They will be blessed and will bless others.
Biblical story. They teach us
something about our spiritual DNA.
As this couple follows, fails, and
fulfills their calling they alternately provide models
and warnings for us. In Genesis, they hear God’s
command and promise, a clear word that they
understand very specifically for their daily lives.
The narrator of Genesis gives no detail about
how and where Abraham hears the Lord. Is it a
vision? a dream? a visitor? We don’t know. Each of
us probably hears God in his or her own way. It
maybe that the call to journey seems natural to
Abraham since his Dad had been on a journey from Ur
to Canaan when the family settled in Haran. We don’t
have much detail about how God speaks or how
Are we called to the same purposes?
The visible showings of God’s blessing (such as
nationhood or children) to Abraham may not be the
same evidence of blessing that God promises you and
me, but we are promised the blessing of a right
relationship with God in Christ, as we respond to
God’s loving actions in our life. We are also called
by God, so that other people will be blessed as we
take on God’s good work in this world.
Ask yourselves these questions: How have
we heard God’s call in the past? Are we following
God’s call? We might need to listen again for clarity
and a renewed sense of how to take the next faithful
step in life.
Abraham feels.
We do know that God says to go and offer
promises (land, nationhood, descendants, reputation)
of things that were valued then and things that are
valued today. In fact, God promises to bless Abraham
In Christ’s Love,
Pastor Ken

PDA Response - PDA immediately contacted Grace
Presbytery to offer our assistance as needed. The presbytery
requested the assistance of National Response Team (NRT)
members and on May 16, team members arrived in the
community.
State and local civic
organizations, as well as VOAD partners, have been active in
the response.
The team visited partner organizations in the Multi Agency
Response Center, and spent several hours helping with the
assessment of damage and talking with survivors and local
volunteers who were working to clear debris. Most of the
immediate needs, sheltering, feeding and clean-up/debris
removal, seem to be going well. City and state officials reported
that they are pleased with the progress. Concern was expressed
for first responders who have been going non-stop for most of
the week. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
debriefing through local agencies has been requested for the
first responders.
Pray for all who have been affected by storms and
flooding, for those who remain in harm’s way and for
those involved in responding to needs.
This year our total given to One Great Hour of Sharing
was $1427.00.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Over the weekend of
May 8, 2015, severe
storms generated large
hail, strong wind and
several tornadoes that caused property damage, injuries and at
least five fatalities in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Nebraska,
Iowa, Kansas, and South Dakota. Some of the areas impacted by
tornadoes a few days earlier on May 6 were once again affected.
Where the tornadoes didn't hit, slow-moving storms brought
torrential rainfall that flooded other areas, creating another lifethreatening danger.
Thursday, June 25 and Friday, June 26
7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
in the Fellowship Hall.
Tickets: $5.00 for ice cream, topping, cake and a
beverage sponsored by the Outreach Committee.
Please mark your calendars and bring your friends
and family for an evening of refreshments and
fellowship.
PDA Response --Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has
reached out to mid-councils in the affected areas to offer the
care of the broader church and is standing by ready to assist as
needed and requested. PDA is still hosting volunteers in the
Moore, Oklahoma area from the 2013 tornadoes.
Author Jim Wallis tells how his young son ends
telephone conversations with him. “Daddy,” the boy
says, “I love you, I like you and you’re incredible.”
What makes an “incredible” father? It isn’t as difficult
as it might seem. Children, of course, aren’t awed by
the size of your paycheck, office or retirement account.
Instead, it’s the simple, everyday gestures that make
you a No. 1 dad.
In Stories for the Family’s Heart, Steve Stephens offers
some sure-fire ways to be incredible in your kids’ eyes:
• Play tic-tac-toe and hide-and-seek.
• Be consistent.
• Buy ice cream cones.
• Don’t discipline in anger.
• Count stars together.
• Pray with (and for) your children.
• Hug and say “I love you” often.
On Sunday, May 10, 2015, an EF3 tornado struck Van Zandt
County and the City of Van, Texas. Initial Assessments
indicated approximately 200 buildings were impacted with 90
completely destroyed. A significant number of the damaged
homes were low-income rental property.
There were two fatalities and more than 40 injuries. Among the
buildings damaged was the only elementary school in Van.
Since the elementary school was damaged the state has given
those students grades Pre-K through 3rd a waiver for the last
few weeks of school. The students and teachers were given an
opportunity to meet in another building to have an end of the
year/school closing experience.
Dad's Incredible
On Sunday, June 7th, The Board of Deacons
will host a reception for the graduates of
The Class of 2015.
To help with food preparation, please sign
the sheet posted if you are planning to
attend.
Please be sure to make note of this special
day and plan to stay and congratulate each of these young
people on their accomplishments.
A Word for Graduates
Congratulations to the young members of our congregation
who are graduating!
No doubt they look forward to the next
phase of their lives with excitement,
anticipation and perhaps a little
apprehension.
We hope these words, adapted from
Phillips Brooks, will serve graduates
well as they embark on their journeys:
“Do not pray for an easy life;
pray to be a stronger person.
Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers
but for powers equal to your tasks.
Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle,
but you will be the miracle.
Every day you shall wonder at yourself and the richness
of life which has come to you by the grace of God.”
