AP Literature & Composition Summer Assignment Students entering the AP Literature & Composition class are required to read Heart of Darkness and Their Eyes Were Watching God in preparation for the first unit of study of the course. A reading journal for each book with dated entries identifying a key quote* from each chapter with a brief written response to that quote will be collected and graded during the first week of school. Students should be ready to identify characters, setting, plot line and major thematic elements. The reading journal may be generated electronically but will need to be printed to hand in during the first week of school. Students are also required to read two other books from the recommended list below and be prepared to identify the use of literary elements such as plot, character, setting, theme, point of view, symbol & irony, etc. These books will create the source content for the practice “Free-response essay” found on the AP exam. Please refer to the list below for suggested readings * a key quote is one that identifies a major theme, illuminates a key character or serves as a symbol or just seems to the reader to be important. The response will clarify the importance of the quote.
