Virtual Labs
• The ICT / Convergence program at Orange Coast
College has committed fully to the use of virtual labs
using the Netlab environment.
• The environment is in the process of a major upgrade
due, in large part by donations from our Business and
Industry partners:
–
–
–
–
Netlab upgrade from AE to PE
Storage upgraded to SSD drives in both VMware servers
Three additional servers
Two additional Cisco pods
Virtual Labs
• The ICT / Convergence program currently uses
Virtual Labs in the following classes:
– Cisco Semesters 1-4 (CCENT / CCNA)
– VMware Server ICM
– VMware Desktop ICM
– EMC Storage
– Linux+
– Network+
Virtual Labs
• Custom lab pods are being developed for the
following classes:
– Voice Over IP
– Wireless
– Residential Networking
– Health Information Technologies
Student Outreach and Coaching
• Our biggest increase in student enrollment has come
from members of our Business and Industry
Leadership team to be trained and prepared for their
environments
• We are working with the Orange County ICT Regional
Advisory Committee to establish pathways for high
school students
• The college has recognized our contribution and is
assisting by writing press releases and publication
articles about the program and to assist in outreach
to the underserved community
Student Success Stories
• Two students with the same story:
– Both students have taken several of the ICT/Convergence
classes.
– They are now working in positions with large companies in
the Orange County area.
• One heads up technical sales and support for a company that
builds high-end residential wireless infrastructure
• The other is a data center administrator for a company that
manages cloud data for law firms across the US
– Both students agree that they would not have the
positions they have without the courses and programs at
Orange Coast College.
Student Success Stories
• … and, to give back to the program
– The two students come back to OCC to recruit
students finishing up the program
– The two students are encouraging their employers
to become members of our BILT
– The two students are encouraging their coworkers to take classes and complete the program
at OCC
Student Success Stories
• … and, to give back to the
program
– Both students have arranged
for their companies to donate
equipment to the ICT program
• Pakedge has donated over 200
WiFi access points, 20 switches,
firewalls, wireless controllers and
other infrastructure.
• Precision Discovery has donated
a Hitachi AMS1000 SAN array
with over 600TB of storage.
The Future
• Curriculum
– Advance the ICT / Convergence Certificates of
Specialization into …
• A set of Certificates of Achievement
• Associate of Science Degree.
• Articulation
– Currently working with Brandman University (the
online arm of Chapman University) to establish a
transfer program in the model of University of North
Texas
– Working with counselors and faculty from local highschools on creating pathway programs
The Future
• New Programs
– The ICT / Convergence program has become a “jumping
off” point for a new Health Information Technology
program.
• This program is under development with members of the BILT
from several of the major hospitals and medical services
organizations who have recognized that our students are
extremely well prepared in the areas of networking, virtualization,
storage, etc.
• The program will have two tracks:
– Project Implementation and Management
– Technology Implementation and Management
– Both tracks have a 4-course core which includes topics from the
ICT/Convergence program
– The Technology Implementation track requires the students to select 4
courses from the existing ICT/Convergence program
The Future
• Recruitment
– Work with college counselors and the public relations
department to recruit and retain underserved
students
– Work with high schools to promote ICT / Convergence
– Attend conferences in order to promote the
Convergence College Network
• Virtual Internships / Externships
– Our Health Care BILT partners have agreed, in
principal, to setup virtual internships and externships
this coming year.
Lessons Learned
• The single biggest change that affected the
program was the addition of the stacked
certificates.
– With only the one, single certificate offered, it
was difficult to keep students engaged with
the desire to return to take additional classes.
– The data indicates that the students will
continue to return to take additional classes
and earn additional certificates and
certifications.
