The Maths team teach a range of subjects: AQA GCSE Maths and GCSE Statistics, FSMQ in Additional Maths and entry level Maths. The department staff are extremely hardworking, dedicated and enthusiastic. Maths results over the past few years have been outstanding and on a rising trend. Continual assessment and tracking of students’ progress enables the department to help each student reach their full potential. Expectations of students, parents and staff alike are high, and GCSE results are well above the national average. KS4 C+ 2008 2009 78% 81% 2010 79% 2011 2012 81% 86% When students arrive at Summerhill they are assessed and setted during the first few weeks based on their KS2 results, teacher assessments and our own assessment. At KS3, we set the 7 mixed ability forms into two deltas of three ability bands each. The top set in each delta are fasttracked through the KS3 curriculum. In Year 9 they are taught the first year of GCSE Mathematics. At KS4, all 7 form groups are mixed together into 8 streamed teaching sets. Traditionally the top two sets are fast-tracked and take GCSE at the end of Year 10. This allows up to open up their curriculum in Year 11 to either taking GCSE Statistics or FSMQ Mathematics qualification. Sets 3, 4 and 5 are Higher Tier and sets 6, 7 and 8 are Foundation Tier. We are currently finishing classes with the AQA Modular course and are deciding whether to take AQA linear or Edexcel linear in future. Meetings/In-service Training takes place on Monday evenings from 3.45 – 4.45 pm and regular department meetings form part of this programme. Staff meetings and year team meetings complete the programme. In addition there are regular middle level leaders meetings every half-term. FACILITIES The Mathematics suite at Summerhill School comprises of six purpose built classrooms off a central corridor, a preparation room and a Mathematics office. Access to one of the school’s four bookable computer resource areas is easy whilst each classroom hosts a computer, interactive whiteboard, projector and telephone, enabling us to be leaders in the teaching of Mathematics. The school is part of the Dudley Grid for Learning so that now every room in the school has a direct link to the network and associated software. Students have open access to the learning centre for study and research. Corridors are also used as teaching and display areas; a small computer network of 5 computers exists outside one of the classrooms whilst the display areas are used to reinforce the reward system promoted by the Mathematics department as well as display students’ work. The ethos of the department is one of working hard to achieve the best results possible for each student. New initiatives are adapted and consolidate the work of the department.
