Direct Quote: Filipino leader, Emilio Aguinaldo explains in his speech on American Imperialism in the
Philippines how Americans do not take them seriously, “You repeat constantly the dictum that we
cannot govern ourselves…little over a hundred years ago, it was extremely questionable, when you,
also, were rebels against the English government, if you could govern yourselves…” (qtd. in Foner 69).
Paraphrase: In “Aguinaldo’s Case against the United States”, Emilio Aguinaldo explains how Americans
believe Filipino’s to be ignorant when it comes to taking care of themselves. He states it wasn’t that long
ago when American’s were rebels and were being questioned by the English government on whether or
not they could govern themselves so they should give Filipino’s the benefit of the doubt instead of
assuming (qtd. In Foner 69).

imbalance between males and females in fine arts programs, “As expected from the attention paid to
‘missing males’ in the prior literature, there is an extreme imbalance between male and female
enrolment in choir. Across all 10 cohorts, the ratio of females to males enrolled in choral music
ensembles remains remarkably stable at roughly 70% female to 30% male, with some slight deviation
from cohort to cohort” (Elpus 88-102).

Direct Quote: Indiana Senator and Historian, Albert J. Beveridge explains that Filipino’s are not able to
create a working government in a short time period because it took white’s thousands of years to
achieve it, “What alchemy will change the Oriental quality of their blood and set the self-governing
currents of the American pouring through their Malay veins? How shall they, in the twinkling of an eye,
be exalted to the heights of self-governing peoples which required a thousand years for us to reach,
Anglo-Saxon though we are?” (Beveridge).
Paraphrase: In the speech, “In Support of an American Empire” made to congress by Albert J. Beveridge
in January of 1900, Beveridge expresses his opinion that “Orientals” or Filipino’s are not capable of
creating a working government such as an American democracy in a short time period. Beveridge says
that this holds truth because it took Anglo-Saxons thousands of years to reach the point that they are at
so there is no way Filipino’s can do it in a shorter amount of time (Beveridge).
