It was after the depression. Now parents said that their kids will have it better than them. The kids were known as the Silent Generation because they didn’t rebel or express their opinion. They just went with the flow of things and kept to themselves. House with a picket fence and a barbeque. Two kids: Boy and Girl Back to the 50s Room The fifties brought the new type of music called Rock N Roll. Elvis Presley was labeled the King of Rock N Roll. At the time, the parents thought some of the moves Elvis were “inapproiate” to the public eye. It was a new generation where people started being less censored. Television started to take over the radio so the radio started to improve by presenting recording music, news, talk shows, and weather. Click the Elvis Picture to see a clip of him playing “Heartbreak Hotel” in 1956. Back to the 50s Room •Television made it big in the 1950s. •Sitcoms were very popular. •The most famous one would be I Love Lucy. •Another one was The Ed Sullivan Show which Elvis appeared on often. •Over 80% of households had televisions. TV was significant because it was another example of how technology keeps expanding, people could use it to see news updates, and it was entertainment that has affected generations up to today. One of the longest wars in history. It was battle over communism. Some countries in Asia wanted to world to become communists. America didn’t want that so the war begun. It was battle against Communism. This war soon became the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Back Click Here To See What You can Do. Although they weren’t slaves, African Americans still were treated badly and segregated from the whites. Then they decided to not put up with it anymore. Martin Luther King Jr. is the leader of this movement. He gave a speech to people telling them his dream of blacks and whites coming together. Other important black civil rights leaders are Malcom X and Rosa Parks. Without this movement, who knows how blacks would be right now. There would still be separate schools for blacks and whites. This movement changed the world. I thought this video was interesting because Malcom X is actually criticizing Dr. King who most people view as brilliant. Malcom X seemed to have more hate on whites than Dr. King. Click the link to read an article on Dr. Martin Luther King & See a video of his “I have a dream speech.” Back to the 60s Room This war was one of the worst wars we’ve ever been in. It brought in the Military Draft which is when the government picks random men by date of birth to join the war involuntarily. It was extremely unfair. I think the military draft goes against everything America claims to be. It started because of the communism going through the world and America thought everyone was going to become communist, the domino theory. This war affected everyone whether they were in it, had family in it, or just witnessed it through television. Most people that did survive the war were never the same because they’ve seen so much violence and horror. United States 58,000 lives 350,000 casualties More Info Vietnam One-two million deaths Song Facts: Let It Be By The Beatles Back to the 60s Room The sixties is the best generation of music. They influenced music today. Unlike today’s music, the music never gets old. People are still listening to this music today. Music of this time was mostly about drugs, love, sex, peace, or just living life. Yet the songs still had a message and a meaning. No generation can beat the music of the sixties. Music is how the youth expressed themselves in the 60s. With family members or themselves being shipped off to war, it was hard for people to stay happy. Music helped that. I don’t think many people would have gotten through the sixties without music to free them from the horror going on in the world at that time. Back to the 60s Room The counterculture is the most interesting aspect of the 60s to me because I believe in most of things they stood for. If everyone just got past the money, politics, and war the world will be at peace. Although they had the right idea, a lot of them didn’t go about it the right way. They were getting into very dangerous drugs and having unsafe sex. Overall though I think that if everyone thought that way, the world would be a better place because it’s hard to watch people killing each other over religion and money. The counterculture changed the world. A group of young people have never affected the world so much. They made the sixties. Back Click Here To See What You can Do. Music of the 70s was just to entertain instead of sending a message. This showed how generations were changing now that the war is over and there is a different environment for youth. Disco hit it big. It started with African Americans and Latinos. Pretty soon white kids started picking it up. The movie Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta made disco even bigger. Back to the 70s Room The term “Me Decade” was created by Tom Wolfe. When you compare the 60s and the 70s, everyone is more self absorbed in the 70s. “Everything is all about me.” The 60s were about everyone coming together, fighting, and protesting for their beliefs. Now in the 70s, people are just looking out for themselves. Search for Zen, enlightenment, and fulfillment. Back to the 70s Room Nixon’s administration’s attempts to cover up its involvement in the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and other illegal things in Nixon’s reelection campaign. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were reporters on this case. Five men had broken into the Watergate apartment-office complex. Nixon was impeached because he was involved in the Watergate cover-up, misused federal agencies to violate the rights of citizens, and wouldn’t turn over the tapes that Congress requested. Back to the 90s Room This day will be forever remembered. So many innocent people died. Planes were hijacked by terrorist to hit the twin towers and the pentagon. Both the towers collapsed and killed so many people. This was also the Gateway to the new war to be started in Afghanistan and eventually Iraq. No one will ever forget this horrible day in history. It is very significant to this generation because it caused a lot of the problems we had today and killed our loved ones. The heroes of this story are the fireman who risked their lives and managed to save some of the victims in the towers. Back to the 90s Room In Iraq, there were weapons of mass destruction that were a threat to us. In Afghanistan, Osama Bin Laden was a threat to America and had been behind the attacks on September 11. There are a lot of debates on whether these wars should be taking place. They haven’t done a good job for George Bush’s reputation. He’s received a lot criticism on the wars being pointless, killing our soldiers, and killing our economy. These two wars have affected our world so much. Our economy is in a recession. We’ve lost a lot of lives. Overall the wars aren’t doing us any good. Back to the 90s Room Barack Obama made history as the first black president to be elected into the White House. Many people wanted change from George Bush and Barack Obama was that change. He ran up against John McCain. His vice president is Joe Biden. He ran for the Democratic Nominee which he beat Hillary Rodman Clinton (The First Woman to Run for President) in. Woodstock took place on August 15-18 1969. The three day concert had to have been unforgettable. There was about 400,000 people there on a 600acre dairy farm in Bethel, NY. Everyone came from all over America. It was the biggest concert of all time. Woodstock was an expression of all the hippies and people of the counterculture. If I could go back in time, I would go to Woodstock just to know what it was like to be. Music legends played there. It would have been amazing to see. This concert made history. It was probably the best experience ever. We thought we were all individual, scattered hippies. When we got there, we said, 'Wait a minute, this is a lot bigger than we thought.' We flew in there by helicopter and saw the New York State Thruway at a dead stop for twenty miles and a gigantic crowd of at least half a million people. You couldn't really wrap your mind around how many people were there. It had never happened before, and it was sort of like having aliens land." –David Crosby Continue Back So many legendary artists performed at Woodstock 1969.
