Analyze social and cultural contexts and stereotypes in the poetry and drama of Shakespeare. B. Analyze Shakespeare's poetry and drama using the conventions of literary study. C. Apply generic considerations to the poetry and drama of Shakespeare. D. Examine the revolutionary development and presentation of human character in the poetry and drama of Shakespeare. E. Recognize Shakespeare's relevance to diverse cultures. F. Relate the characters and situations in Shakespeare's poetry and drama to contemporary life. G. Examine Shakespeare's use of language. H. Develop alternative interpretations of Shakespeare's texts. Texts: William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night William Shakespeare, Othello William Shakespeare, Henry IV, Part I William Shakespeare, the Scottish play William Shakespeare, Hamlet William Shakespeare, The Tempest Requirements: 1. Regular attendance & active participation in discussions. 2. Keeping up-to-date on the reading and bringing a copy of the play each time. 3. Eleven quizzes and short assignments. 4. At least one meeting with the instructor. 5. Midterm and Final Exam. 6. One marked-up scene and one Expanded Analysis 7. Participation in enacting a scene from one of the plays. . Grades: 90-100% = A, 88-89% = B+, 80 -87% = B, 78-79% = C+, 70-77% = C, 60-69% = D A- and B- reserved for special cases. [Possible 450 points] Quizzes and homework = 10 points each and I drop the lowest [100 points] Marked-up passage (20 points) Midterm = 50 points Final = 100 points Expanded Analysis (paper) = 100 points Participation in acting scene = 40 (includes 1-page analysis) Class participation, including attendance = 40 points Notes: You must attend every day or risk being dropped (4 unexcused absences = automatic drop).
