Mythology Unit

The freshmen are expected to read excerpts from the Odyssey as an introduction to Greek mythology. Instead of reading the Odyssey , English 9 Honors will focus on Edith Hamilton’s book, Mythology , which highlights an array of myths that will allow the class to develop a deeper understanding of Greek mythology.

Week One

Tuesday

In-Class: Read and annotate “Introduction to Classical Mythology”

Homework: Chapter I

1. Annotate The Titans the Twelve Great Olympians pages 21-25

2. Each student needs to create a 1 slide presentation (PowerPoint or Google Presentation) of their section to present to the class on Wednesday. Each presentation should include a visual for the god or goddess.

Homework: Find two creation stories from other cultures to share with the class on Friday

Friday

In-class: Small Groups: myth sharing and completion of values and beliefs from these cultures

Homework: Read and annotate “Cupid and Psyche” (pages 121-134)

Week Two

Monday

In-class: Discussion of “Cupid and Psyche” & writing prompt

Homework: Read and annotate “The Quest of the Golden Fleece” (pages 159-179)

Tuesday

In-class: Discussion of Greek culture and viewpoints based on these myths

Homework: Read and annotate one chapter from Part Three “The Great Heroes before the

Trojan War”

Wednesday

In-class: Share stories, discuss and analyze

Homework: Part Four/Chapter I

Thursday

In-class: The Fall of Troy

Homework: Chapter III

Friday

In-class: Book 9 from the textbook

Homework: Read The Cyclops Polyphemus (pages 105-111) & prepare for essay test about

Homework: Revise and edit your myth – it is due on Monday!
