You can find my website by going to www.chino.k12.ca.us. Find “schools” at the top of the page. Go to Wickman Elementary, then classrooms. You will find a list of all teachers’ names. Click on my name. • REMIND: Please text 81010 to your phone. In the message box, type @mrsluiten Language Arts • I will be implementing Common Core State Standards for First Grade. • Please access all Common Core standards on the Chino Valley Unified website. • Language Arts skills will be integrated into all subject areas. • Foundational skills( phonics, grammar) will be explicitly taught daily. • Students will read and be exposed to a large variety of text and trade book literature, as well as nonfiction text. (50/50) • Students will be taught to write to a specific purpose. ( Opinion, Informative/Explanatory, and Narrative pieces) • Students will practice and be expected to speak in complete sentences using proper and/or academic vocabulary that has been taught. AR • AR is a school-wide reading incentive program that encourages students to read books at their reading level and pass comprehension tests online at school. • STAR test is administered at school and ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) is determined. Students should be reading books in their ZPD level. • Students can choose books from class or school library. MANY books that you have at home may be AR books. • Students must know correct title or quiz number to take an AR quiz at school. • Students should progress through 8 AR levels this school year. It takes approximately 5 books to achieve 1 level, depending on comprehension test score. • Level 8 is 20 points for First Grade. Raz-Kids • Raz-Kids is an online reading resource unrelated to AR. • Access Raz-Kids.com through my website under “helpful websites”. Simply click on the link. • Raz-Kids has hundreds of books online. Students are assigned a level. They listen to a book being read, read it themselves and take a short comprehension quiz. Students cannot take AR quizzes on Raz-Kids books. • Raz-Kids can also be done in place of nightly reading homework requirement. Math • We will be implementing Common Core Math Standards utilizing enVisionMath series. • Please refer to Math Standards in your outline OR on the District Website. • IXL Math. This is an online math supplemental program to utilize at home to reinforce skills taught in class. This program can also be used for students as a challenge. Snacks and Lunch • Students may bring a healthy snack out to first recess. • Please pack snack and lunch separately so that your child does not eat his/her lunch during snack time. Please make sure your child knows the difference. • Please make lunch purchases online to reduce loss and confusion. • Students may bring in water bottle into class. No flavor mix-ins and no holes punched into the cap. Birthdays • Students may bring in a goody bag to be passed out at the end of the day. Stickers, pencils, erasers and small toys work well. • Please do not send in any product with peanuts in it due to many students with peanut allergies in our classroom. Classroom Management • We utilize a color coded daily behavior chart. Students record behavior color daily on a calendar. Green: Having a great day! Yellow: A warning color. Make better choices. Orange: Consequence assigned. Usually 5 minutes off recess. Red: Office referral and/or phone call home • I usually have student explain the reason for yellow. I will communicate the reason for orange and beyond behavior. Classroom Management Continued Positive Rewards • Raffle tickets awarded daily. Student receives one ticket for every day he or she is on green. Raffle tickets can be redeemed for Wickman bucks or class prizes. • Verbal praise and small incentives are also used when students are “caught being good”. Homework • Students will be given Homework Packets each Friday. They are to complete and return their homework by the next Friday. • Purpose of homework is to set good and consistent study habits and to practice academic skills. • Students are expected to do 20 minutes of homework and 20 minutes of reading each night. I have helpful links that your child can access on my website if they want to add more challenging work to their homework. Scholastic Book Club • Monthly book orders will be sent home in the Homework Folders. • All Book Clubs can be accessed online at Scholastic.com. Please place your order and pay online. If not possible, send in paper order and payment. Make checks payable to Scholastic. • Place orders online using our class code DTKKX and help our class earn free books for our class library. Parking Lot Etiquette • It’s crowded and ordered chaos. • Please encourage your child to follow Wickman rules. Rules are in place for the safety of all students. • Do not call for your child to run into parking lot without an adult. • Please follow staff parking lot directives and pull forward when asked. • Please teach your child to pay attention and look for your car.
