On November 26 we have a Thanksgiving Eve Service at 7:00 p.m. On November 30 & December 3 we begin a sermons series to help prepare for Christmas by considering whose birthday it is and how we respond. Bishop Jung is Visiting Don Shire is Visiting On November 12 Bishop Jung will be visiting the churches in our circuit during the day and then speaking to the entire circuit that night at a 7:00 p.m. gathering at Christ Church. You are invited that evening to hear about the vison Bishop Jung has for imagining Wisconsin anew! Don will lead us in one joint worship service on Sunday November 23 at 10:00 a.m. during which he will share his musical gifts with the trumpet and stories from his mission work. After worship you are invited to join in our Thanksgiving Dinner. Praise Reports We celebrate the baptism of Noah Follensbee, we have two new banners in our sanctuary, and we began our second year of confirmation with 7 students. Our Mission: Love God, Love & Serve Others, Make Disciples of Jesus Christ THE ANNOUNCER is a publication of Christ Church United Methodist, 5109 Washington Ave., Racine, WI 53406 Christ Church United Methodist - Phone 262-632-1607, Fax 262-632-1609 students, . www.christchurchracine.com, E-Mail address: christchurchracine@tds.net From the Pastor’s Desk November is here, for many that means Thanksgiving is coming (hunting too). Time to get the family together and the meal prepared so that we can join in thanksgiving to God for all the blessings of the past year and for the best blessing of all, Jesus Christ our Savior! As we approach this holiday season, let us all seek to remember the many things that we have to be thankful for. No matter what physical possessions we may or may not have, or the current state of our lives, we are all blessed by God’s love for us. God has given us so much, many known and unknown blessings, that it is only right to praise Him and to come with thanksgiving. I hope that we remember our blessings not just once a year, but every day and I hope that we respond to God’s love with thanksgiving not just once a year, but every day as well, thankfulness should be a natural state of being for those who have encountered the love of God. To help us remember and express our thanksgiving regularly we take time in our worship services to respond to God’s love by giving of our time, talents, and finances, along with our lives to God for the glory of His name and for the work of the Church. These acts are an important part of worship, but God desires that we will live out our lives for Him every day. I encourage us to daily lift up praise for those blessings that we have, big and small, both the obvious things like the birth of a child, or a promotion, and the things that we may take for granted like food, family, clothing, health and work. As we recognize our blessings let us also recognize that a part of showing thanks to God is to let God bless others through us by how we live and how we give. I am inspired by the people in our congregation who, year after year, faithfully pledge and give abundantly. We have truly found that with God we will have enough and much to share. I think of Jesus’ words in John 10, where He says that He has come so we may have life and have it abundantly. We are blessed with many gifts here at Christ Church; God has truly blessed us abundantly and is blessing others through us. Through the history of the Christian Church God’s people have been marked by their spirit of hope, love, and generosity because of the change God makes in their lives through Christ. Let us continue to keep true to this pattern. Let us show those around us that there is something different about God’s people, let us live out of our joy in Christ and be thankful in all situations and generous with our time, talent, and finances. I am excited and looking forward to the things that God will do through those who live with an attitude of gratitude and who are willing to be formed and directed by the Holy Spirit. Have a great Thanksgiving. . God Bless, Pastor George J. Kafer P.S. DISCIPLINED FOLLOWERS OF JESUS A disciplined person is someone who can do the right thing at the right time in the right way with the right spirit. A disciplined person is not simply someone who exercises many disciplines. A disciplined person is not a highly systematic, rigidly scheduled, chart-making, gold-star-loving early riser. The Pharisees were rigid and organized, but they were not disciplined persons in the sense required by true discipleship. Disciplined people can do what is called for at any given moment. They can do the right thing at the right time in the right way for the right reason. This definition applies to artists and athletes and astronauts as well as to followers of Jesus. A disciplined follower of Jesus -- a "disciple" -- is not someone who has "mastered the disciplines" and never misses a daily regimen of spiritual exercises. A disciplined follower of Jesus is someone who discerns when laughter, gentleness, silence, healing words, or prophetic indignation is called for, and offers it promptly, effectively, and lovingly. -- John Ortberg in The Life You've Always Wanted Raise Funds For Ministry Through Normal Internet Shopping By using UMC Market when you do your everyday shopping; you are able to donate to Christ Church at the same time. Apportionment Giving Christ Church has a history of 100% apportionment giving, allowing us to help transform lives by God’s love. Apportionments provide for ministries that directly help over 50,000 people in Wisconsin and many more beyond. In 2014 our apportionment is $50,483, if we each give faithfully to the general fund and if able a special gift for apportionments, $130 a year per member, we can continue to support connectional ministries and free up more of our general funds to increase outreach and ministry in our local area. Stewardship Makes a Difference! Thank you for all the ways you support ministry. This newsletter has examples of how our church is making a difference in people’s lives through your giving! It is good to see people trusting in God and answering His call to give. People are offering themselves to serve and their financial giving (several tithing 10% of income, or working toward tithing)! Check the connection table for Electronic Fund Transfer forms and ways to give of your time and talent as well. As you respond to God’s call in the giving of your time, talent, and resources remember if you have a need contact Pastor George. A Sound Money Management Plan God desires that we live balanced and abundant lives. God knows that money can cause us problems both the lack of it and letting it rule our heart. The 10-10-80 money management principle helps us keep things in check and honor God. Tithe 10% of our income to God through the Church, save at least 10% of our income for future needs, and then live off the remaining 80%. Doing this grows our relationship with God, helps enable the ministry of God’s Church, and helps us to have financial freedom. The idea is give back to God and live within your means, don’t borrow money for something that is not a need, instead, save up for it. Don’t fall into the trap that says more stuff equals more happiness and don’t think that what you have is just yours and ignore God’s financial directions. All that we have is a gift from God and earned by the talents and skills God has given us. In our culture money is an idol, which holds the center spot in many people’s heart, God wants that center spot, and following the Biblical model of tithing is an expression of gratitude and a tangible way to put God first and help carry out His will. Those who have learned to trust God in tithing have found that God is faithful to provide. For your own spiritual growth and the growth of our church, I pray that that you will join Cassandra and me along with others at Christ Church in following a money management plan that allows us to be good stewards and God honoring with our income. BLESS YOU AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS HEARTS! Loving Christ or Culture? In a recent article for his blog, Ed Stetzer writes: "Too many churches love their church culture more than they love Christ's mission. Yet if I follow Paul in the way he followed Christ, I will care for people of the culture who exist outside my church. The gospel has not changed. The mission has not changed. It is still on a mission of reconciliation, pleading on behalf of Christ, "Be reconciled to God" (2 Cor. 5:20). So if we're going to endure today, to be faithful in faithless times, we're going to have to leave where we are comfortable. We're going to have to go and tell, not just wait for them to come and see. We always must build a biblically faithful church, but live in the context where we find ourselves. Where we are may influence the way we have conversations about Jesus, but the conversations always are about Jesus. Paul was unashamed to say, "What you have worshiped in ignorance, this I proclaim to you." We live in a world where people are unaware of the true gospel of Jesus Christ. The answer for being faithful in faithless times is to take the unchanging gospel message to build bridges, start conversations and engage in relationships with people who are far from God. The problem is that many of us have forgotten that ministry must be less about us and more about Jesus, His Kingdom and His mission. When I look to Paul, I am struck with his boldness and savvy. May we all be bold and wise as we engage an increasingly hostile and confused culture around us with the greatest news the world has ever known--Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life." UMW COOKIE WALK and HARVEST BAZAAR The United Methodist Women Cookie Walk and Harvest Bazaar will be held from 9 - 11a.m. on Saturday, November 1. This is our main money making project of the year. The proceeds are used to support missions here in Racine and around the world.
