information – you give reasons.
Advise = What? When? Who? Where?
Explain = What? When? Who? Where?
How? Why?
Writing to Explain
Explain how to make a cup of tea:
To start with, you need to fill the kettle with cold water,
otherwise it can boil dry. You should make sure you
don’t go over the ‘maximum’ line, so that the kettle
doesn’t boil over and burn you.
Whilst the kettle boils, add one tea bag to each cup, as
well as any sugar that you want.
Consider how to answer a writing to explain question:
Although writing to explain does not require the
interesting imagery of writing to describe, it is not a
boring set of facts like writing to inform.
Consider how to answer a writing to explain question:
For example, consider the sentences below. Yes,
they are explanatory, but they are also dull.
How could we improve the sentences?
On my first day at school I felt nervous.
The Millennium Dome is large.
The sea looked clear.
