COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Scientists and engineers are changing the world all of the time. They dream up creative, practical solutions and work with other smart, inspiring people to invent, design, create and discover things that matter. AP Physics is a great foundation course if this sounds interesting to you. The topics covered during the course of the year are mechanics and electricity & magnetism. Methods of calculus will be introduced as appropriate with plenty of assistance available as needed. The course will include MIT video lectures, group problem solving, demonstrations, and laboratory activities.

Mid-Year/Final Assessments: At EHS, mid-year and/or end-of-year/course assessments provide authentic, meaningful experiences designed to measure student learning and achievement. These assessments may be written exams, performance tasks, and/or projects. Exams count for 20% of the student’s semester grade.

In this course, students complete a 2 hour exam that is a combination of handwritten problems solving and multiple choice questions.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Classwork:

All class work is designed to enhance your learning of the material. Not all work will be graded, but it is your responsibility to do your best on each assignment as part of the learning process.

Assignments should be completed on time in a thorough and neat manner.

All students are responsible for keeping a 3-ring binder and bringing it to class every day. You should also have filler paper or a spiral-bound notebook for notes and a scientific calculator.

Late homework will be graded, but the grade will be reduced by 10 points for every class that it is late.

If you miss class with an unexcused absence, work due or done that day will receive a maximum grade of 75. There is no extra credit, so be conscientious with each assignment. Copying someone else’s homework or claiming someone else’s work as your own will result in a grade of zero for that assignment.

Absences:

You are responsible for work missed due to an absence from class. If you are out, do not ask Mr.

Pennington what you have missed. Check out unit calendar and the AP Physics webpage. I would recommend bookmarking the link to the webpage.

Please take note of the attendance policy available on the school website: http://www.ccsuvt.org/ehs/EHS-Parent-Student-Handbook.pdf

Classroom Behavior:

Please show respect for others in the class at all times. Support each other in the learning process. Be involved during class with relevant participation and questions.

Drinks are allowed as long as they are in transparent containers. They are not allowed in areas where spills may damage school property.

Laboratory equipment must be handled with care. Please handle the equipment carefully and let me know if any materials are damaged.

Electronic Devices:

The following guidelines apply in all CCSU schools:

Students may use electronic devices in designated areas . The use of camera functions is strictly prohibited in all restrooms and/or locker rooms.

Electronic devices may be used in academic classrooms at the discretion of the classroom teacher.

Any electronic device that is brought to school must be the responsibility of the student, and the school is not liable for its safe keeping. Students are expected to use electronic devices appropriately, if a student fails to do so, then he/she will be asked to relinquish the device to school personnel. The device shall be returned to the student/parent at the end of the school day. Any student who fails to relinquish an electronic device upon request shall be considered insubordinate and disciplinary actions can occur.

Designated areas for EHS: Hallways during class passing times, cafeteria(s), lobbies.

Please see the EHS Parent and Student Handbook and the CCSU Parent and Student Handbook for additional relevant information related to policies and student expectations.

Please print and sign this last page and return it to your teacher.
