1. Principle- (noun)- a set of rules, often in ethics
He lived by the principle of always giving back money when you
find it.
2. Elegant (adjective)- simple in an ingenious way (based on
scientific theory or solution to a problem)
The computer processor is an elegant solution to a scientific
problem.
3. Equations (noun)- algebraic sentences
The equations in Math were really easy to solve.
4. Reluctant (adjective)- lack of enthusiasm or eagerness
I was very reluctant to go onto the huge roller coaster.
5. Detached (verb)- disconnected or separated
The string was detached from her coat, making it unable to close.
6. Decomposition (noun)- rot or decay, breaking down
The decomposition of plants brings nutrients back to the soil.
7. Specimens (noun)- samples to look at or observe
I collected bug specimens to study them further.
8. Complex (adjective)- very complicated
The maze was very complex and hard to get through.
9. Compromised (verb)- to settle differences
My sister and I compromised on where to eat for dinner.
10. Shriveled (adjective)- to shrink
The grape shriveled as it was left out in the sun and the moisture
let out.
Vocabulary Strategy
Latin Roots and Affixes
*Affixes are various types of word combinations that when added
change the meaning of a root word. Such examples are prefixes and
suffixes.
*Root words are words that stay the same after all the affixes are
removed. There are some common Latin root words.
Latin Root Words:
Aud- means to hear or listen
Lumen/luc/lum- means to light
Mov/mot/mobil-which means to move
Prefixes:
Im- not
Re-again, back, backward
Sub-under
Suffixes:
-Ous- full of
-able- capable or worthy of
