THE GLAMOUR
& THE SQUALOR
Long synopsis (212 words):
The Glamour & the Squalor is the story of Marco Collins, one of America’s last great rock radio DJs and a musical tastemaker that changed our culture.
Before the Internet made sourcing new music and rising bands a simple matter of keystrokes and RSS feeds, there was the radio DJ. Those with an insatiable thirst for the fresh and undiscovered relied on the savvy DJ with the right connections to feed us a steady diet of the up and coming.
For the bands, it was said DJ who provided the air-time, created the buzz and could ultimately set the stage for stardom. No one epitomized this role like Marco Collins.
He was the on-off switch for an artist’s potential career and was the gatekeeper credited for helping break the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Beck, Weezer, Garbage and countless others.
The film skillfully splices together archival footage of Marco and the bands he helped break to the masses with animation, recreations and interviews of Marco and the over 20 subjects that help shape his story, along with an original score by Pearl
Jam’s Mike McCready.
Marco turned his passion for music into a significant lifetime of work, battling some seriously determined demons along the way. And he’s still standing.

& THE SQUALOR
Director’s Statement:
The idea for the film came in December of 2011. I was at my family’s cabin an hour outside of Seattle working on another project and would often find myself in the car on the 8-mile stretch between our house and the nearest small town. To pass the time, I’d tune into the only radio station with a signal strong enough to reach me –
107.7 The End.
The End had my ear particularly at this time because they were broadcasting their
20-year anniversary special and counting back the 107 most important songs in the history of the station. More specifically, I was intrigued by the incredible stories of the past being told by current and past DJs.
The program did a fantastic job painting the picture of what the scene and the station were like. The music coming out of Seattle at the time shaped not only my own childhood, but an entire generation of people. I couldn’t help but be in awe when reminded how many of the biggest musicians in the world were all in the same place at the same time. I immediately thought of how to turn this story into a movie – one filled with musicians but focused heavily on the DJs and personnel that ran this radio station in the middle of it all.
As I began my research, it became apparent there was one man in the epicenter of all the action more than the rest…Marco Collins. I spent the next month developing the film as a feature narrative, one that would need a script, cast—the whole deal.
Advice from a filmmaker friend steered me in the direction of developing the film as a documentary.
We’ve been so fortunate to build an incredible team of collaborators and supporters along the way. It is the collective passion put into the project by the entire team that makes the film what it is. It has been a labor of love for many of us; a process filled with many ups and downs and extreme emotions. We’re so excited to have the opportunity to share the film with you.
About the Production and Technical Details:
Production for the film commenced in January of 2013 and took the crew to San
Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento and New York in addition to the bulk of the film that was shot in Seattle. Interviews with over 40 people were conducted to ensure we were telling a complete and balanced story.
A “script” of sorts was then written from the interviews and ideas were generated for how to tell the story visually. Hours upon hours of archival materials were sourced to begin filling in the picture, followed by reenactments shot with actors in
Seattle and San Diego and, finally, 10 minutes of animation produced in collaboration with The Secret Service Theme Park.
Several verite scenes completed the production of the film.
