Do Good. Careers with Service Organizations
Tuesday, January 22, 6-7:30 p.m.
State Room East, Indiana Memorial Union
Four nationally recognized service organizations will speak regarding challenging and exciting
employment opportunities serving communities in need. Peace Corps, City Year, Teach for America, and
Academy for Urban School Leadership representatives will discuss how you can use and develop your
skill set in the US or abroad, how to make yourself a standout candidate, and outline the benefits of a
career in service. The panel will be followed by a meet and greet.
City Year: City Year is an education-focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people of all
backgrounds for a year of full-time service to keep students in school and on track to graduation. At City
Year's 24 urban locations across the United States, teams of highly-trained corps members serve fulltime in schools as tutors, mentors and role models. By focusing on attendance, behavior and course
performance, which identify students who are at risk of dropping out, corps members are uniquely able
to help students and schools succeed.
Teach For America: Teach For America seeks to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting outstanding
recent college graduates, graduate students, and professionals - of all academic majors and career
backgrounds - to commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools. Our corps members
become lifelong leaders in the effort to make a great education, and the opportunities that come with it,
a reality for all students. Teach For America's network in the 2012-13 school year includes 10,400 corps
members teaching in 46 regions across the country and nearly 28,000 alumni working in education and
many other sectors to create the systemic changes that will help end educational inequity.
Peace Corps: Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps by executive order on March
1, 1961, more than 200,000 Americans have served in 139 host countries. Today, 9,095 volunteers are
working with local communities in 75 host countries in the fields of Education, Health, Agriculture,
Environment, Youth and Community Development, and Business. Peace Corps service is a 27-month
commitment and the agency's mission is to promote world peace and friendship and a better
understanding between Americans and people of other countries.
Academy for Urban School Leadership: AUSL is a nonprofit school management organization in the City
of Chicago. We are working to make education inequality a thing of the past by partnering with the
Chicago Public Schools district to effect massive changes in Chicago's highest needs schools via our
unique Turnaround process. As part of the Turnaround process, we specially train effective urban
teachers in our Chicago Teacher Residency Program and place them directly into our new Turnaround
schools.
