AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE 1960’S 1960 • WOOLWORTH’S WAS A VERY POPULAR PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO SHOP AND EAT. • THEY WERE SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TO THE SUPER WALMART STORES WE HAVE NOW. WOOLWORTHS IN THE 60’S HOWEVER, SEGREGATION WAS THE LAW. AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE NOT PERMITTED TO SIT AT THE COUNTERS AND BE SERVED. GREENSBORO FOUR IN FEBRUARY, FOUR FRESHMAN FROM NORTH CAROLINA A&T DECIDED TO CHALLENGE THE LAW. THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE BEGINNING TO SEE THAT PROTESTING, BOYCOTTING, AND MARCHING COULD HELP THEM GAIN EQUAL RIGHTS. HOWEVER… EVEN WHEN THEY PERFORMED PEACEFUL PROTESTS, BLACKS WERE MET WITH EXTREME VIOLENCE FROM WHITES; INCLUDING THE POLICE, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND THE KKK. IT TOOK STRONG CONVINCING FROM SOMEONE WITH GREAT ORATORICAL SKILLS AND PERSUASIVE SPEECH TO ASK PEOPLE NOT TO REACT TO CONSTANT PHYSICAL ABUSE. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DR. KING WAS A PHENOMENAL SPEAKER WHO MIXED GREAT ORATORICAL SKILL AND THE BIBLE TO PERSUADE OTHERS TO BE NON-VIOLENT IN THE FACE OF VIOLENCE. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HOW LONG…NOT LONG. YOUTUBE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT YOU COULD BE CONVINCED TO ALLOW SOMEONE TO BE VIOLENT TOWARDS YOU AND YOU DO NOTHING IN RETURN? KING • ASSASSINATED WHILE STANDING ON A HOTEL BALCONY • KILLED BY A WHITE MAN • DIED AT 39 • KNEW HIS TIME WAS COMING DR.KING “I’VE BEEN TO THE MOUNTAINTOP.” MARTIN & MALCOLM ALTHOUGH THEY DIFFERED IN OPINIONS THEY WANTED THE SAME FOR BLACKS. SAM COOKE – 1960’S HIT A Change is Gonna’ Come Became sort of an anthem during this time period because of the way Blacks were feeling. THE FIST OF FREEDOM 1968 When Dr. King was assassinated the Black community was outraged. Many riots took place throughout the country and people were more vocal about their concerns of racism. 1968 During the same year two college athletes training for the Olympics were inspired to make a difference in society. SOCIOLOGY PROFESSOR HARRY EDWARDS Reminded all of the Black college athletes of racism in America and encouraged them to BOYCOTT the OLYMPICS. HOWEVER Tommy Smith & John Carlos decided to participate in the Olympics. They decided that they would DO SOMETHING to expose the racism in America if given the opportunity.
