THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE
BEGINNING TO SEE THAT
PROTESTING, BOYCOTTING, AND
MARCHING COULD HELP THEM GAIN
EQUAL RIGHTS.
HOWEVER…
EVEN WHEN THEY PERFORMED PEACEFUL
PROTESTS, BLACKS WERE MET WITH
EXTREME VIOLENCE FROM WHITES;
INCLUDING THE POLICE, THE FIRE
DEPARTMENT, AND THE KKK.
IT TOOK STRONG CONVINCING FROM
SOMEONE WITH GREAT ORATORICAL SKILLS
AND PERSUASIVE SPEECH TO ASK PEOPLE
NOT TO REACT TO CONSTANT PHYSICAL
ABUSE.
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR
DR. KING WAS A PHENOMENAL SPEAKER WHO
MIXED GREAT ORATORICAL SKILL AND THE BIBLE
TO PERSUADE OTHERS TO BE NON-VIOLENT IN
THE FACE OF VIOLENCE.
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
HOW LONG…NOT LONG.

THE FIST
OF FREEDOM
1968
When Dr. King was
assassinated the Black
community was outraged.
Many riots took place
throughout the country and
people were more vocal
about their concerns of
racism.
1968
During the same
year two college
athletes training for
the Olympics were
inspired to make a
difference in society.
SOCIOLOGY PROFESSOR
HARRY EDWARDS
Reminded all of the
Black college athletes of
racism in America and
encouraged them to
BOYCOTT the OLYMPICS.
HOWEVER
Tommy Smith & John Carlos decided to
participate in the Olympics.
They decided that they would DO
SOMETHING to expose the racism in
America if given the opportunity.
