Name April Vela Grade Level 12 California Academic Content Standards-based Lesson Plan Format Subject: Social Studies (May Lesson Plan TAHG 2012) Content Standard(s): 12.7.7 - Identify the organization and jurisdiction of federal, state, and local (e.g., California) courts and the interrelationships among them. Instructional Objective Students will analyze various California court cases, create a Power point presentation, write a report describing the court cases, and present their findings to the class in groups. Instructional Design/Delivery Design: This lesson is designed for the end of a unit on government and may consist of 5-7 class sessions. Delivery: 1. Students will form groups of 5 members. 2. Students will elect one leader to monitor the group and assign specific jobs for each member. 3. Each group will receive a different California court case: Williams v. California (2004), Sei Fujii v. California (1952), Moore v. Regents of the University of the California (1990), Tarasoff v. Regents of the University of California (1976), Cohen v. California (1971), Miller v. California (1973). 4. Each group will read the information provided about the court case given, annotate, and discuss the data. 5. Each group will work to develop a Power point presentation for the class. 6. Each group will work to develop a report indicating the details of the court cases given. 7. Finally, each group will report and present the data to the class. Assessment Entry-Level The entry-level assessment will be based on previous participation, homework, class assignments, tests, and discussions on California government. Monitoring Progress The teacher will monitor progress by visiting each group and discussing the court case given to each group. The teacher will also meet with the group leaders to discuss any questions or conflicts. Post-test Assessment The post-test assessment will be based on the presentations given in class as well as the reports. Universal Access Reading Difficulties Advanced Learners English Learners Instructional Materials Students with reading difficulties will receive support from the group leaders and teacher. Advanced learners will assist English learners and students with reading difficulties. English learners will receive support from Advanced learners, group leaders, and the teacher.
