Research Dossier: Communication Sciences and Disorders/Autism Spectrum Disorders
Dossier Introduction
An autism spectrum disorder is a general term used to categorize a variety of complex disorders
of brain development. The word ‘spectrum’ refers to how there is just not one true autism. There
are different types that go from severe mental impairment to a mild form of autism. The most
common characteristics in an individual who is autistic are having difficulties in social
interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. Till this day, we do
not fully know or understand why this happens. What researchers have discovered over the last
couple of years is that, just like how autism is not solely one specific thing, one specific thing
does not cause it. There are many factors that can be triggered such as environmental, prenatal
care, and even the process of how the baby is born. And unfortunately, there is no cure. We
cannot stop it but we can impede it. We do this by intervening as quickly as possible with
therapies that will help the individual overcome obstacles.
It can be absolutely devastating when a family first learns that their child has been
diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. But getting a diagnosis is essential for giving your
child the best tools to live an independent and fulfilling life. Speech language therapy gives
people the tools necessary to do everyday things that they might have trouble doing. My major is
Communication Sciences & Disorders and for this research paper I would like to look in to how
speech therapy helps individuals with ASD.

Controlled Trial Of The Effectiveness Of Speech And Language Therapy For SchoolAge Children Who Have Pragmatic And Social Communication Problems With Or
Without Autism Spectrum Disorder." International Journal Of Language &
Communication Disorders 47.3 (2012): 233-244. ERIC. Web. 19 Feb. 2014.
In this journal entry it studies the effectiveness of speech language therapy for school-aged
children with or without Autism Spectrum Disorders. I think it would be hard for this journal to
have biases based on the fact that it is a randomized controlled trial. I believe this is a credible
site and can benefit me with my research project.

This is an article found on a web academic journal. It concentrates on learning through
interaction in children with Autism. I feel this will help my research for my paper by learning

how one with Autism views the world. Maybe by seeing things through their eyes the world can
better help and understand them. I believe this is a credible source because the authors of the
paper are certified speech language pathologist.

therapies an individual can benefit from. This is a credible source because it focuses on speech
pathology from actual speech pathologist.
