Online Learning in Detail
As an online learner, you must be committed to the online learning process. The
commitment to online learning takes maturity in understanding your personal needs
and drive for higher education and organization. Be aware that online classes are as
academically demanding (if not slightly more so) than traditional classes. Online learning
is going to take self-discipline to sit down behind your computer and “go to school.” If
you have trouble with self-discipline, online learning may not be for you. The ability to
structure your commitment to the pre-professional rigor and online learning
environment is a necessity.

Prepare for
the week
academically
The key success is keeping to your study schedule. Therefore, you will need to remove
distractions. To loose your focus for a phone call, email, or even the television will
hinder your academic progress. Tell your family, friends, or anyone that will listen, this is
your class time. Promise yourself you will keep focus and reduce the possibilities for
distractions around you. You must build the habits of study, and controlling your
distractions will assist in your success. Be aware, there will be times when rehearsals run
over or when you will be waiting for your turn on stage, you will need to manage your
study time wisely.
Online students need to actively participate, seek help from teachers, and take
command of their learning. Online classes require a personal drive, independence, and
maturity to seek help from teachers when needed and to appropriately share thoughts
with online classmates. Online courses lack immediate face-to-face feedback, yet this
should not deter you from seeking help. When the lack of understanding sets in, it
becomes extremely important to seek answers and help from your teacher and
classmates. Teachers want to be asked for help. Being a passive learner in an online
class is an invitation to calamity.
Online students must exhibit tolerance for technology. As much as we would wish
otherwise, technology can be difficult. Sometimes the school’s technology fails;
sometimes your home equipment fails, sometimes instructions for how to use new
technology are not ideal. To succeed as an online student, it is very useful to have
tolerance when the technology is not working. You will also need to know who to
contact for technological help at school or in the real world. The ability to relax, regroup and re-boot can be invaluable.
Academic success is tied to understanding your learning style. There are different
online learning platforms, yet the majority of forums require a great deal of reading and
are geared more toward the verbal learner than the visual learner. An online learner is
a capable self-learner who is comfortable with reading words at a Lexile score of 900
and above.
Note to Parents: Parental support, guidance, and structure are needed for your dancer
to achieve academic success. Students who have traditionally been in Early Intervention
Programs (EIP) or currently have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504
Documentation please contact Danette Hasek (770-655-8725) to discuss online learning.
