1. What does Publius say are “the two great points of difference between a
democracy and a republic”?
2. In paragraph three, what does Publius say is a danger in a republic?
3. How does Publius think that this danger will be negated in a republic?
4. Publius identifies two problems associated with the number of representatives to
be elected. Explain those issues.
5. Explain how the concept of federalism will negate these issues.
6. In the second half of this excerpt Publius states that “a greater number of citizens
and extent of territory…may be brought within the compass of republican than of
democratic government.” Write a “letter to the editor” agreeing or disagreeing
with Publius’s reasoning. Use quotations from the excerpt to describe his
positions. Your letter must include the following:
a.) An introductory statement of your position.
b.) Supporting sentences explaining Publius’s reasons and your position on
them.
c.) A closing paragraph.
