Read the article “How to Detect Propaganda” by The Institute for Propaganda Analysis
-Annotate for key words, definitions, and author ‘project’ (aims, methods, materials)
2. -
Using the suggested websites on the attached sheet, or any additional website you find,
collect one example of propaganda for each of the seven propaganda devices. (Name
Calling, Glittering Generalities, Transfer, Testimonial, Plain Folks, Card Stacking, &
Bandwagon)

Create a collage OR presentation using your seven examples. The college/presentation
should show the title “Propaganda Devices,” your seven examples, each labeled with the
appropriate device, and your name. The collage may be done on paper or poster board
and the presentation may be done using PowerPoint, or Prezi.

While presenting your collage/ Prezi/ Powerpoint, be prepared to verbally answer the
following for each type of propaganda:
A. What makes this funny? What is being highlighted and what is being
satirized?
B. -How is propaganda a powerful took when combined with mass media?
C. -How is each picture an example of that particular technique? What
strategy is being used?
Additionally, you must do the following by the end of your presentation
A.-What effect does this type of propaganda technique have? (claim)
B. -What kind of impact do you think this particular example had? What
message is it perpetuating? (ideology)

Try to include one or two picture ads as well as political cartoons supplied above. Pick your
favorite company or store (Sony, Target, McDonalds, Barnes N Noble, Nintendo, Prada, etc.)
and go to their website to see if you can find a picture ad exemplifying one of the propaganda
devices.
