Education/Student Design
Competition
• VSTOL Air Taxi project this year for graduate competition
• Have received solicitation for RFPs for next year’s competition
– Discussed if we want to submit something for this
– General consensus is that we should try and submit something every
year
• Student participation has been dropping off in recent years
– A lot of the RFPs are looking alike year after year
– Have seen less innovative designs submitted
• All committee members need to think about ideas for RFPs and
write up very short abstracts. Send these to Dave Hall and Bill
Fredericks at a minimum (feel free to send to everyone)
• Integrate with Personal VTOL Hero X Award?
Publications
• Year in Review input was submitted in early September (on time) for
publication. The year in review included updates on the F-35, V-22
and JMR-TD programs. The “Year in Review” downplayed UAVs in
the interest of space and due to ample coverage in other publications
(including Aerospace America).
– The rules of the Year in Review have been recently changed (600
words and no more than two pictures allowed).
• Items for Discussion:
– Aerospace America published our input, but changed the pictures I
submitted (V-22 and CH-53K pictures)
– Is the article posted on the TC website?
– Submission of more TC articles to AIAA Aerospace America
throughout the year as a means to increase our visibility?
– Potential advertisement for our TC on trade publications to encourage
membership. Is that allowed by the AIAA?
Website
• Waiting for the final roster to be finished before I put something up.
– Q: We have the current org chart up (restricted to members – do we
want this open to everyone?)
– A: Roster is Current, and needs to be posted. Org chart after Today’s
Election can be Updated and Posted. Rick to Make sure you have
Latest of Both
• Do you want to upload the Charter document once it has been
finalized? (A: Yes, Charter document was Finalized and Approved)
• In order to update the site I need information on:
– F.E. Newbold Award information (very lacking in information in this
area, especially early on)
• A few links have been broken due to a system upgrade (In-Work)
• Would be good to have more information on the Short Course
(photos/images to brighten up the pages?)
• All meeting minutes are available
• As always calendar needs more information
Liaison
• Iris Curtis has “Volunteered” to Lead this Effort
– Need to Re-Invigorate Efforts/Process and get Organized
• Need to Solicit Input Like the Attached and Consolidate into Report
– Lessons Learned from Other TCs/PCs/Orgs
– Opportunities to Interact Formally or Informally with Others
• Current Active Liaisons
– Transformational Flight PC – Andy Gibson, Bill Frederick
– Aircraft Design TC – Dave Hall
– Air Breathing Propulsion TC – Jack Sokhey
– Applied Aerodynamics - Mark Calvert (Informal Through Eric
Charlton)
– Green Engineering – Andy Gibson
– AHS
– RAeS?
– Student Activities Committee – Dave Hall
IPLC 2016 Planning Committee
• ASTC Organization
– Nominally Run Through SAE Propulsion Committee – Ramesh
Rajagopalan (ramesh.rajagopalan@pw.utc.com) is Chair
– Jim Sherman (jsherman@sae.org) is SAE Event Lead
– Archie Thompson (athomson@sae.org) is a Key SAE Contributor Due
to his Technical Background in Aerospace
– Frank Bokulich (bokulich@sae.org) is our High-Level POC in SAE
– Do not Intend to Start Planning in Earnest until Nov 2015
– Will Integrate IPLC Directly into all Planning
• IPLC General Chairs (Focused on Big Picture/Lining up Speakers)
– Currently Rick Mange & Jack Sokhey
– Will Need Substantial Help from Others (Mike H./John S.)
• IPLC Tech Chairs (Focused on Putting Together Detailed Program)
– Andrew Gibson (Chair), Angelo Collins (Deputy)
– Will need Substantial Help from Others to be on Committee and Chair
Sessions
IPLC 2016 Planning
• In Conjunction with 2016 SAE Aerospace Systems & Technology
Conference (ASTC - http://www.sae.org/events/astc)
– Focused on Systems Integration (VS, Avionics, Etc.)
– Usually Sponsored by a First-Tier Supplier (Honeywell, GE, Etc.)
– ~400 Attendees held in the Fall of Even Years
• Have Fully Engaged on Planning Committee and Pressing for
Advantageous Sponsor/Location
– At UTC/P&W East Hartford
– Planning Committee Started (Next Slide)
– Need to Get Key Financials/Attendance Figures from AHS to SAE
• Advantages for IPLC Include:
– Getting in on Ground Floor Planning
– Being a Major Player in the Conference (~20%)
– Having Three Full Years to Plan and Build Great Conference
– Will Help Drive some Significant Propulsion Presence in IPLC

V/STOL Short Course
• Smithsonian eliminated
• Could do at Centra
– Want to pursue this option further – Action Iris/Paul
• Should we change the theme a little to be less JSF
– It is mostly technology anyways with some JSF so would just be
cutting back on JSF unique
– Maybe bring in some transformational flight and other future topics
• Paul Bevilaqua has action to send out course syllabus for the last
time we held the course to the committee - Completed
• Start laying out plans to hold this in the June 2015 time frame (5
days)
• Discuss this with the transformational flight PC
• Plan on having details available by SciTech time frame so can
advertise there
