Carbon By: Devin Desir Who discovered carbon? • The answer to this question would be no one really knew who discovered carbon, but in the late 18th century Antoine Lavoisier discovered that diamonds were made from carbon, and René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur discovered how to make steel using a mixture of Iron and carbon. When was it discovered? • Carbon was discovered in 3750 BC. Atomic Symbol Atomic Number Atomic Mass • 12.0107 ± 0.0008 Amu Number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. • Protons: 6 • Electrons: 6 • Neutrons: 6 Is carbon a metal, metalloid, or nonmetal? • Carbon is a non-metal, all elements on the right side of the periodic table are nonmetals. Is carbon a solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature? • At room temperature (25 C), carbon is a solid. Carbon has the highest melting point of all the elements. Melting Point: 3823 K (3550°C or 6422°F). Boiling Point: 4098 K (3825°C or 6917°F). What Group is carbon in? • The carbon family is element group 14 of the periodic table because it was founded way before any other element. What period is carbon in? • Period 2 What types of isotopes does carbon have? • Carbon has three naturally occuring isotopes: C-12 (98.89%), C-13 (1.11%), and C-14 (about 1 part per trillion). C-14 is not stable, and decays by emitting an electron (beta minus decay) into N-14, with a half-life of 5730 years. There have been fifteen total isotopes of carbon observed, with mass numbers ranging from 8 to 22 inclusive. What is carbon’s electron configuration? • The electron configuration of carbon is 1s2 2s2 2p2. The shorthand version is [He] 2s2 2p2. • Ionization • the condition of being dissociated into ions (as by heat or radiation or chemical reaction or electrical discharge) • The ionization energy of carbon is CN+ -> C(N+1)+ + e- What ion is carbon • The charge of C ion should be 4-. Only metals and hydrogen in an acid form positive ions. • Atomic radius of carbon • Atomic radius of carbon is70 pm. Electro negativity • The electro negativity of carbon is 2.55. • Define Electro Negativity: the tendency of an atom or radical to attract electrons in the formation of an ionic bond. 3 Interesting facts • Pure carbon exists free in nature and has been known since prehistoric time. • Carbon is the fourth most abundant element in the universe. • Carbon has the highest melting/sublimation point of the elements.
