Enchanted World - Lesson 8
The Saddest King
Learning Outcome:
To answer questions about the story, drawing on own experiences (Begin
to use talk instead of action to rehearse, reorder and reflect on past experiences
linking significant events from own experience and from stories)
To talk about emotions and why experiences make us feel certain ways
( Have confidence to speak to others about their own wants and interests)
Introduction to Topic:
Read the story The Saddest King with the children. Discuss the following:
Happiness - In The Saddest King everyone in the country is always happy, no
matter what happens to them. Do you think this is possible? What does
happiness mean to you? When do you feel happy and when do you not?
Sadness - “It’s alright to be sad. Everybody needs to be sad sometimes.” The
boy reminds the King that we should be allowed to have different emotions for
different situations in our lives. Can you think of times when it is alright to be
sad? Can you think of other times when it is alright to feel a certain way?
As a group activity, have the class think of all the different feelings that a person
can have - happy, sad, angry, disappointed etc. Make a list. (Student Resource
1)
Main Activity:
Ask the children to each choose any emotion. Choose one emotion to model
sentence writing with. Using the template (Student Resource 2,) model guided
writing for the children using the sentence ‘I feel … when I ...’ (e.g. I feel happy
when I go to the park, I feel excited when it’s my birthday.) For children who are
more confident writers have them work independently. For emergent writers
sound out the words they wish to write. There is space below the writing for a
drawing.
Supplementary Activities:
 Have a circle time. Start with ‘if my friend was feeling sad I would …’
 For more able writers they can have a go at the Knowing My Emotions
worksheet – Student Resource 3
 Ask the children to have a go at drawing faces with different emotions,
using the picture template to support them – Student Resource 4

Lesson Log:
Today we read the book ‘The Saddest King’ by Chris Wormell. It is a story about
a king that orders everyone to be happy but there is one boy who is sad because
his best friend, a dog, has died. We discussed how it is alright to feel the way you
feel and talked about the emotions we all have. We learnt a song called Colours,
it is all about emotions.

Kira Willey Colors Lyrics
I am green today
I chirp with joy like a cricket song.
I am gray today
Gloomy and down like a morning fog.
I am orange today
Loud and messy like finger paint on the wall.
I am red today
Hopping mad like a playground ball.
I am black today
Strong and tall a great big bear.
I am purple today
Bright and happy like a butterfly in the air.
I'm a rainbow today
All the colors of the world.
I'm a rainbow today
All the colors of the world.
I'm a rainbow today
All the colors of the world are in me.
I am yellow today
I shine my light out like the sun.
I am white today
Soft and quite like new snow.
I am blue today
Calm as glass and cool like the sea.
I'm a rainbow today
All the colors of the world.
I'm a rainbow today
All the colors of the world.
I'm a rainbow today
All the colors of the world are in me.
All the colors of the world are in me.
