Sample Letter to the Editor (newspaper, magazine, etc.) [today's date] ADHD Awareness Month, October 2015 Dear Editor: It is estimated that 1 in 20 people have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), but 85% of them don’t know they have it! The stigma, myths, and misinformation that surround ADHD often keep people from seeking the diagnosis, treatment and support they need to manage the challenges that come with this disorder. Unmanaged ADHD can have tremendous negative consequences, such as substance abuse, addiction, prison time, divorce, and job loss. Not fun. While not every person with ADHD faces these extreme consequences, feelings of anxiety, frustration, low self-esteem, and depression are common, especially for those who suspect something is wrong, but can’t figure out what. Treatment is often a very effective and validating experience, and does not always involve medication. Please consider running a feature article during the week of October 16-22, 2011 on one of the following topics, or a related topic of your choosing: College or academic challenges associated with ADHD Relationships, sex and ADHD ADHD and workplace issues Special issues facing women with ADHD Regional, real-life stories of adults living with ADHD (what it’s like to be diagnosed as an adult).
