Assignment 7 – Reconstruction Timeline
Performance Assessment
Subject: History/Social Studies - Grade: 10
Teacher: William R. Casto
Performance Task
Title: Reconstruction Timeline
Content Standard(s): SS.10.H.CL4.5: Students will evaluate effects of Reconstruction on the
nation (e.g. the roles of the Civil War Amendments, Radical Republicans, etc.).
Learning Objective: (Synthesis) Using PowerPoint students will create a timeline containing at
least six detailed explanations of major events spanning the Reconstruction Era, from its
beginning to its end.
Teacher Written Objective: Students will create a timeline of major events during the
Reconstruction Era, including at least six major historical events along with descriptions.
Brief Description of Task: Students will be split into groups to work on this project. Students
will spend several days in the library/computer lab researching the Reconstruction Era. Each
group must identify six major events from this time period and create a PowerPoint presentation
that describes them in detail. Each member of the group must participate in some way. After the
research period, one or more members of the group will give an oral presentation to the rest of
the class.
(For large classes groups may be given more specific time frames to research and create a
timeline, rather than working on an overview of the entire Reconstruction Era, to avoid too much
repetition of the same material during latter oral presentations.)
Instructions for Students:
-
Students will be split into groups by the teacher and given time to research for their
Reconstruction Timeline in the school library and computer lab. Time spent
researching will be flexible; each group will have time to complete the assignment.
-
Each group will decide upon individual responsibilities (such as group roles). Each
member needs to participate in some way. If the group is unable to assign
responsibilities the teacher will. (Group participation will be individually scored)
-
After initial research, students will plan the overall design of their presentation.
Events will need to appear in chronological order for full points.
-
Presentation Design: At least six images should be included in the presentation, one
for each major event discussed. Presentation should be well designed, present
information in a clear and concise way.
-
Use the attached rubric to help fully complete the assignment.
-
Be prepared to discuss your timeline with the rest of the class.
