Concurrent Workshops - Morning Man School: What it means to 'Man Up' (Stacey Jordan) This session will teach the young males how to practice behaviors that cause them to succeed--things such as: choosing the right friends, using their unique abilities, finding their vision, overcoming setbacks and adversity and enjoying victories in make good decisions. Students will be taught to manage their emotions and measure their responses in confrontational situations and bullying strategies, from conflict at school or home to rudeness on the road. Students will be given a scenario, role play, prepare a script on the wrong way and the right way to handle peer situation, divide into groups and then make a presentation and explain why handling the situation in a positive way is more effective (www.dreamblueprints.com). Study Skills Strategies: (Nathan W. Lewis) This session stresses development of positive attitudes and improvement of basic learning habits. The session will include seven strategies for effective learning, value assessment and educational goal setting. Stresses strategies in understanding and responding to textbooks, lectures, and other methods and materials encountered in the academic environment. The emphasis will be on organization of materials, note-taking, time management, and preparing for and taking examinations. Jones) Some students view bullying as a game – somebody has to win and somebody has to lose. The fact of the matter is nobody wins, when bullying is the name of the game. Students have important roles to play in responding to and preventing bullying. Discover the power you have inside that can make all the difference. Also, what about cyberbullying? One in five students report being cyberbullied. Learn how to beat the odds. Bullying is no match for a Game Changer! Fatherhood and Mentorship Initiative: (Mu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity) Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is partnered with President Obama’s White House Fatherhood and Mentoring initiatives and is charged by the President to lead this initiative. Mu Nu Chapter is leading and partnering in three (4) Key Events during the 2013 calendar – the Game Changer Conference for Young Males, March of Dimes for Babies on April 27, Fathers, Sons, Mentors Activity Day (TBA) and a Father & Daughter Dance on December 7. The Fatherhood initiative session aim is to promote the urgent need of Black men to be responsible leaders in the household, workforce and community. Vance) It is critical for young African American males to recognize and understand the signs of potential outcomes of Crucial Conversation. Students will define and dissect the elements of crucial conversations (Opposing Opinions, Strong Emotions, and High Stakes), how responses to Crucial Conversations can result in good and bad outcomes. Against a backdrop of recent shootings and killings of unarmed Black Men, the group will explore concepts that can help our young males and fathers recognize when a conversation may be crucial and how to use effective communication techniques to peacefully resolve disagreements and assure successful outcomes, (reggievance@yahoo.com). Team Building: No “I” in Team (Dr. Vroman Wright) The workshop is designed to challenge young males to learn to work as a team in spite of pressure on life journey. Young males will be required to identify areas where the group needs to solve problems or communicate better. (Targets “4 C’s of 21st Century Learning: creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking). Interactive exercise will place young males in a circle that is divided on one side by key words and statements such as: Friendship, Cooperation, Trust, Communication, Vision and Leadership). The group members will be bound by a “special bond”. The group members will be handed piece of paper with key word and asked to step outside the group and explain, (vwright@bgcgw.org). Personal Accountability: Man’s Greatest Enemy – Laziness? (Chester Harding) In this workshop students will examine their life and decide if LAZINESS has become a part of their fiber and what action is required to change direction. Students will learn techniques to fend off LAZINESS and make simple changes that will impact your entire life. As young males striving for excellence you must learn to do the opposite of Laziness by hard-work, attention to detail, and be industrious - keep it moving at all times, (Chester_L_Hardy@mcpsmd.org). The Swag: Dress for Success (Juan Peoples) How should you see yourself and how do you want the world to see you? It is critical for young African American males to recognize and understand the importance of making a great “first impression” are long-lasting. By dressing well, young males can give off the appearance of being confident, attractive, put-together men that any decision-maker would want to hire and any young woman would want to date. Students will learn simple steps for being a Game Changer that can dress to impress every day! Image and Stereotypes in the Media: (Isaiah Wallace) Don’t be too quick to say, “The media don’t affect me!” This workshop will address the different stereotypes in the media that affect our youth today. People all over the world use the media every day. Whether it's using a computer, watching TV, reading a newspaper, talking on the phone, or listening to the radio – many of us interact with media daily. Through the media, you can find out about important news, listen to your favorite music, rap, hip hop, or watch your favorite TV show. But there are also negative sides of the media that can be especially harmful to teens and young adults like you. Workshop will center on interactive discussion about these topics. The STEM workshop is an introduction to exciting career fields that is essential for competing in the 21st Century job market.
