Lesson Plan Template Unit (topic/skill): Multiplication and dividing Topic: multiplication/dividing problem solving Grade: 6 Time allotted: 38 minutes Overview and Purpose – What will be learned? Connections to other topics. SWBAT work together to solve word problems involving decimals and whole number multipliers (0-9) and divisors (1-9). Outcomes/Indicators: with an “I can” Outcome: N6.4 Extend understanding of multiplication and division to decimals (1-digit whole number multipliers and 1-digit natural number divisors). [C, CN, ME, PS, R] g) Solve a given situational question that involves multiplication and division of decimals, using multipliers from 0 to 9 and divisors from 1 to 9 I can solve word problems containing decimals by multiplying or dividing Lesson Plan: Jeopardy in partner game with an associated worksheet . 1. Introduction: Motivational Set The Jeopardy theme song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWuQVpBeqLs Today we will be playing jeopardy in our desk pairs. Each student will have to record answers and work in the correct square. This will be your work sample for marking. On your worksheet you need to have shown answers and work for at least 4 questions in the 100-300 categories and 2 answers and work for questions in the 400-500 categories. You are a team! You need to help each other but do not allow copying of answers. Everyone here has been practicing multiplication tables in Math Passports and is very capable to solve the game problems. Each answer on the handout will be marked out of 3 marks, 2 for the work and 1 for the answer. 2. Methods (What will be you doing and in what order?): Now I will explain the rules of the game. 1) I am acting as Alex Trebek. 2) Students will be randomly asked which question category they want to choose, via the popsicle draw for the ten teams. Now if that final answer is incorrect or the timer runs out the pair behind gets a chance at 30 seconds to make the necessary corrections . Note the egg timer is set for 3minutes once the question has been read, which may have to be adjusted if that is too long or too short. Why? Practice for real life situations but the question may come to you if the other team makes a mistake. 3) Now I will make the partner teams. Teams will generally be made based on desk patrners. Assign each set of partners a number from 1-10 (to correspond with the popsicle sticks) 4) Now my helpers I will demonstrate an example of the game. Pick from the 400 category. Show my work using the chalk board. And ensure students are following along on their sheet. Next we will hand out the Jeopardy square response sheet. While that is happening, everyone take out a pencil and eraser. There will be a prize for the team with the most points so choose your questions carefully as every team may not get to go twice. I have a tie breaker question ready in the event of a tie. My fudge bill came to $18.72. I bought 9 pounds of peanutbutter fudge. How much was each pound? ($2.08) Are there any questions about the game before we begin? Transition statement Let the games begin! Draw the first popsicle stick then place to the side so they do not get drawn twice before every group has had a chance to go at least once. Candy Store Motorized I want to buy 5 chocolate bars.
