Produce a report on leadership based on the information gathered. (Records must be kept of at least three different research methods, the information gathered and a report provided). This report can be presented in a variety of ways. Tick () the style of presentation you have chosen to use. Written report Presentation/talk Electronic presentation Video Podcast Other There can be as many ways to lead people as there are leaders. Business people and psychologists have developed useful frameworks that describe the main ways that people lead. When you understand these you can develop your own approach to leadership and become an effective leader as a result. Define what you think is meant by ‘research’: ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ What different ways can be used to carry out research? List as many as possible: Select three of the methods above that you will use to research different leadership styles. Put a tick next to the three you have chosen. In pairs, give examples of what you consider to be ‘skills’ people can possess. Jot them down on the mind map on the following page with examples of what they may require these skills for. Do the same for ‘qualities’ (a mind map is on next page). What is a skill? ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ What is a quality? ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ Are there any skills or qualities you would change on your mind maps following your discussion? Why? The following space can be used to make further notes on skills and qualities required for effective leadership which can then help with your report if required: ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ This space can be used to take notes from your methods of research on leadership styles if required: ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ Task 2 – Reaching Conclusions About What Makes An Effective Leader: Identify the skills and qualities which can be found in effective leaders. This should be based on your report for Task 1. Give examples to support the skills and qualities identified. Provide a comparison of the effectiveness of different leaders. To do this you will need to identify real life examples of effective leaders and compare the different ways in which they provide effective leadership. Once you have done so, you should reach conclusions on the skills and qualities of an effective leader. (You may wish to use a table similar to the one provided on the next page). Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about the growing in others. Discuss who you would consider to be ‘great leaders’ and the reasons why. The space below can be used to take notes and jot down ideas: Leader 1 Leader 2 Name Name Skills Skills Qualities Qualities Background information Background information Achievements Achievements Task 3 – Evaluate Your Own Potential For Leadership Identify your own skills, qualities and experiences in relation to leadership. Using examples, draw conclusions about these skills, qualities and experiences. To complete this task you have to carry out an evaluation in relation to leadership. You will need to think about your: skills (ie what you can do) qualities (ie being approachable, well organised etc) experiences (ie work experience, being in charge of a task, working with someone who took a leading role). Part of your evaluation could be done with a partner. An aspect of being an effective leader is to be aware of how you appear to others as well as being able to evaluate yourself. Choose someone who will be honest, but sincere with you. You may wish to use a table similar to the one provided on the next page: Learner name Centre Skills and qualities Experiences Conclusions (about your own skills, qualities and experiences in relation to leadership) Folio checklist Learner name Centre The checklist below will help you gather all the information you need for your portfolio. I have gathered the following evidence into my folio. A table showing that I used at least three sources of information to find out about leadership styles. A report on leadership. Conclusions on what makes an effective leader. A self-evaluation of my own skills, qualities and experience in relation to leadership. Tick ()
