inference: combining what you know with what you read to
analyze a story
point of view: vantage point from which a story is told
--first person point of view: narrator is in the story- uses
pronouns like "I, me, my"
--third person point of view: narrator is not part of the storyuses pronouns like "he, she, they"
*omniscient point of view: narrator knows thoughts
and feelings of many characters
*limited point of view: narrator knows thoughts and
feelings of main character only
theme: meaning, message, insight, or moral a story reveals
irony: difference between what is expected and what actually
happens
--Dramatic irony: when the audience knows something the
character does not
--Situational irony: actions have an effect that is opposite from
what was intended, so that the outcome is not what was
expected.
--Verbal irony: The difference between what is said and what is
meant
allusion: when an author refers to a person, place, or event
from history or a famous book that he expects the reader to
know
summary: a brief retelling of a story or event that states the
main idea and supporting details and is in one’s own words

*Yopu must use two direct quotes (with page number) in
your PARAGRAPH response.
Submit packet to bin when done. It MUST be done by the end of

What is the point of view of "Flowers for Algernon"?
Now number 1-8 in your notebook. Identify the
quotes on the next page by their point of view:
1. Charlie thinks he has two good friends.
2. I went back to work at Donnegan's factory today.
3. He gave me a TV contraption that works while I sleep.
4. Frank went home to his wife and told her about how he got
Charlie drunk and ditched him. He didn't feel at all guilty.
The next day Charlie had a bump on his head and decided not
to drink anymore.
5. Miss Kinnian ran to the ladies room. She couldn't believe how
cruel Charlie's co-workers were. When she returned, Charlie told
her about how the TV contraption was frustrating him.
6. I liked having Charlie in my night class for slow readers.
7. Joe Carp sent Charlie out to buy a newspaper and ditched him.
8. Dr. Strauss feels inferior to his colleague Dr. Nemur. Dr. Nemur
has a wife who is only concerned with fame and money. He feels
like he never will make her happy.
Linking verbs- special kind of verb that links the subject of the
sentence to a word that describes or renames it. Think of it as an =
sign!
Bill is sad.

Her car smells gross.
My favorite sport was football.

Before reading
1. Locate your inference arrow and go to page 67 Report 11 (IT IS 5
PAGES!).
2. Discuss with your partner what an inference is (Forget? See notes
from 9/25/15)
During reading
1. Read all of Report 11 with your partner. Read QUIETLY!.
2. As you read, put your inference arrow where you made an inference.
After reading
1. Grab a “What Stuck Today” paper from the front table. Put your
names on it (one paper per group). Find an occurrence of one of the
themes on the bulletin board and record it on the paper with dry erase
marker.
3. Put the paper on the side board under the appropriate theme.
4. Now, with your partner, record six key plot events in your summary
packet.
5. Write the summary (finish for homework)

Bellringer:
1. Choose a key or best scene from the story so far. Record it in your
notebook.
EX: Charlie races Algernon and wins!
2. Now pretend you are any character from the story except Charlie.
Write two to three sentences from that character’s point of view (first
person) about his or her reactions to the scene.
EX: (Burt) Charlie has been losing against the lab mouse for ten weeks
now. He gets so frustrated, I know. Last night when we were running
the maze test, Charlie won for the first time! He jumped up and down,
knocking over my coffee. The smile on his face was ear to ear!

verb, box the helping verb and draw an arrow to the verb that’s helped,
and underline the three action verbs. (5 points)
