As the single race developed into a Carnival the event has grown to see the race course bursting at its seams on Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Day, held the first Monday of August each year, and the total prize money on offer in 2013 stands at more than $1.95 million. Now deemed as Darwin’s premier sporting and social event of the calendar, the 8-day action-packed program of the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival is racing at its best. The Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival continues to put Darwin on the international map with its high quality racing and influx of national competitors and visitors each year. The expectations of full fields with high class horses and some of the best jockeys from around Australia, attracts the biggest names in Australian racing including Gai Waterhouse, Peter Moody, David Hayes and many more. But it’s not just an event for the horse-racing enthusiast; it’s also the centrepiece for a vast range of glamorous social events such as the Bridge Toyota Ladies Day Luncheon and the Qantas Darwin Turf Club Gala Ball. Thousands will experience the thrill of live racing and electric atmosphere trackside as hundreds of thousands of viewers on Sky Racing around the globe also witness the spectacle that will be the 57th Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival. The following statistics help demonstrate just how significant an economic impact the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival has on Northern Territory. In 2012: 4 Over 42 000 spectators attended the festivities over the Carnival period. In excess of $14 million dollars was injected into the local economy. One in every 91 Territorians participated or were employed in the NT racing industry. $8.1 million was spent on accommodation, $6.6 million on fashion and retail and $3.6 million on restaurants and tourist attractions. 2013 Media Kit (Statistics provided by an independent external audit) KEY DATES 2013 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival timeframes: Date Event Name Gates Open Tues 2 Jul Event 2013 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Carnival Launch 6pm Sat 6 Jul Day 1 HOT100 Darwin Guineas Race Day 10am Sat 13 Jul Day 2 TTF Chief Minister's Cup Day 10am Wed 17 Jul Day 3 Bridge Toyota Ladies Day 9am Sat 20 Jul Day 4 SKYCITY Darwin Derby Day 10am Sat 27 Jul Day 5 SKY Racing Metric Mile Race Day 10am Wed 31 Jul Day 6 Colemans Printing Race Day 10am Thur 1 Aug Event Breakfast with the Stars 6.30am Thur 1 Aug Event Magic Millions Tried Horse Sale – Schweppes Pavilion 4.30pm Fri 2 Aug Event Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Barrier Draw 11am (SKYCITY Darwin) Sat 3 Aug Day 7 bet365 Palmerston Sprint Race Day 10am Sat 3 Aug Event Qantas Darwin Turf Club Gala Ball (Little Mindil - SKYCITY Darwin) 7.30pm Sun 4 Aug Event Sportingbet Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Calcutta – Outside Vic Hotel 12pm Mon 5 Aug Day 8 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup Day 8am 5 2013 Media Kit 2013 CARLTON MID DARWIN CUP 6 Course Map 2013 Media Kit 7 2013 Media Kit 2013 CARLTON MID DARWIN CUP CARNIVAL Trainers and Jockeys Licensed Jockeys: ARNOTT, Vanessa CAMERON, Jan CRICH, Phillip DAVIS, Brendon DENTON, Paul HILLEBRAND, Scott HUPPATZ, Barry MONTGOMERIE, Simone MOON, Craig NICHOLLS, Adam RIDLER, Stephen SHIERS, Paul SPRY, Carl STEAD, Andrew 53.0 52.0 52.0 53.0 56.0 53.0 55.0 55.0 56.0 56.0 52.0 56.0 55.0 56.0 Apprentices (with permit to ride in races) ANGEL, Cara 43.0 BERGSTRAND, Felicia 53.0 BROWN, Alana CONNOR, Kacie 50.0 52.0 MANOUKIAN, Kirk TYNDALL, Melanie 54.0 54.0 Licensed trainers: 8 BATES, David NYHAN, Mark BELL, Russell PETRICK, Kerry BROWN, Stephen CLARKE, Gary CLARKE, Shane CONNOR, Greg HALTER, Tayarn JUPP, David LAMPRECHT, Kevin LEECH, Dick MANNING, Jason POLLARD, Chris ROGERSON, Ken SAVAGE, Will TRENGROVE, Algy 2013 Media Kit Restricted permits to train: BOOTHBY, Melinda CARSON, Malcolm HUISH, Jami Visiting Trainers: ARNOLD, Sheila BALFOUR, Todd COLE, Phil COOKE, Quona DYER, Neil GOWER, Stuart HICKMOTT, Michael McLEAN, Jarrod MOODY, Peter (GP) RUMBLE, Merv RICHARD, Bob SEARLE, Gary STANTON, John TRENWITH, Paula 9 PEACOCK, John ROBINSON, Julie WATERS, David 2013 Media Kit SKYCITY DARWIN Triple Crown BONUS: The Triple Crown Bonus is on. Can 2013 deliver a thoroughbred, trainer and jockey combination strong enough to take out the Territory’s ultimate racing prize – the $100,000 SKYCITY Darwin Triple Crown. Only two horses in the entire history of the Triple Crown have successfully managed to win all three legs – 1989 legend Brinney and 1996 star Ventilago. Due to the extreme challenge of winning all three Triple Crown legs, in 1995 it was resolved to raise the stakes and entice competitors with a $100,000 bonus, which is made possible by the generous support of SKYCITY Darwin. The bonus incentive paid off the following year for jockey Dale Coffey when he stormed home on Ventilago in the HOT100 Darwin Guineas, the SKYCITY Darwin Derby and finally the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup. Since 1996 no other horse has managed to win more than two Triple Crown legs, in more recent years the likes of Brad Star (2007), Hawks Bay (2009) and The Ruffian (2011) all kept the dream alive by winning both the HOT100 Guineas and the SKYCITY Darwin Derby, only to fall short in the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup. Seventeen long years have now passed since Triple Crown glory was last won and racing buffs will be eagerly waiting to see if anyone will manage to ‘steal the crown’ this year. 10 2013 Media Kit 2013 CARLTON MID DARWIN CUP Sponsors: Adina Vibe Darwin Waterfront Airnorth Ascend Sales Trophies Avis bet365 Brierty Bridge Toyota Caltex Carbine Club Carlton United Brewers Channel Nine Coates Hire Colemans Printing CoreStaff Darwin Private Hospital Ella Bache Gardens Park Golf Links Garrards Horse and Hound HOT100 / Mix 104.9FM Jewell Distributors/Samsung JR Communications Just Looking Miio Boutique Magic Millions Monsoon Millinery 11 NT News NT Motorcycle Centre NT TAB National Seniors Parap Village Apartments Paspaley Pearls Pearl Galleria Photokenisis Qantas Airways Ltd R.O.A.N.T Rydges Darwin Airport Resort Stomp Shoes Ten Darwin TIO TOLL Top End Consulting Top End Line Markers Trans Territory Foods Unibet Waste Solutions W.A.
