SFCC and UNM-Taos Sign MOU to Support Veteran Students President Guzmán and Dr. Kate O’Neill, Executive Director of UNM-Taos, signed an agreement last week to work together to increase educational services to veteran students. Hundreds of returning veterans are expected to be seeking – and to be eligible for – educational resources designed specifically for them. A new Veterans Resource Center is being created under SFCC’s Office of Student Development. It will be located in the 300 area, where a number of student resources, such as TRiO, disability services, the tutoring center, student activities and others will be grouped together. The partnership was enabled by a federal TRiO grant recently awarded to UNM Taos for the purpose of providing educational services to vets. We want to invest in our vets. They deserve it,” said Dr. Guzmán at the ceremony. “The way to a great life is through education. We will do everything in our power to serve vets well.” “UNM-Taos is honored to work with our vets. They’ve served our country. We need to serve them,” said Dr. O’Neill. “We are excited to be leading the way and formalizing these agreements. SFCC is well poised to make use of these financial and human resources.” Working with UNM-Taos, Veterans Upward Bound and local and state veterans organizations, SFCC will provide assistance to vets such as scholarships, financial aid, a registration day for vets, and other support. Dr. Carmen Gonzales, Vice President for Student Success, said her office is developing programs that will call on all of the local resources available in support of veterans. She said a special workshop during Convocation will focus on helping faculty recognize symptoms of PTSD. “We have been seeing a growing number of vets enrolling at SFCC,” said Randy Grissom, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Our goal is to provide education and training to help them find a job that pays a living wage. I know we will make a difference.” Present at the signing ceremony were Deputy Secretary of Veterans Services Alan Martinez, Randy Larry, Director of Veterans Upward Bound; Edward Mendez, Local Veterans’ Representative, Department of Workforce Solutions; Ernest Madrid and Pablo Ortega, SFCC Veterans United Club representatives; David Lucero, Program Adviser for SFCC and the Santa Fe Area; John Slattery, USMC, ESL Instructor; Keith Melton, Service Learning Outreach Specialist and Faculty Liaison for Veterans, Jane Abbott, Director of TRiO; Cheryl Fields, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success; and Rebecca Estrada-Anderson, Director of Recruitment and Dual Credit Programs.
