France by Jenny Ross 5/6 b France is the second largest country in Europe which has a population of 57.5 million. During this presentation I will tell you many different facts about France. Including geography (landscape and positioning), climate and weather, major cities and much more. France has an area of 550,000 km2,which makes it the largest country in Western Europe its even bigger than Spain, Germany and Sweden. And did you know that France's only mainland volcano is located in Massif Central and it is called Chaîne des Puys. Fortunately this volcano is now dormant. Geography Although France has many other geographic landmarks one that we all know quite well which is found in Paris is the Eifel tower. At 1,050 feet tall, it is one of the world's most recognizable structures, and was completed on the 28th of January 1887. In France there is a mountain called mount Blanc which is the highest mountain in Europe. Did you know that Two thirds of France is just mountains and hills? Climate and weather in the north of France it is cold and is rarely cool or warm. In the south of France however it is warm and is never really very cold no matter what the season. Near the mountains it is cold and they are usually capped with snow, especially in the winter. Also rainfall is common no matter where you are, and is mostly up to 800 mm during 180 days of the year. As you know most of the time France winters are cold and it is likely that if you stay there during the winter period you will see snow. In MARSEILLE, as much as 550 mm of rain falls during 60 days of the year, and the sun shines for more than 3,000 hours each year. Also there are many villages in the high valleys which receive more than 50 days of snow each year! In France there are many different popular places to go but the major cities of France are usually the places I would recommend, some of these are Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Nantes. Paris Lyon Marseille Nantes As the busiest, most cultural and artistic place in France perhaps even the world, Paris was not only given the role of being a major city but was also named the Capital of France. Paris has many structures that attracts many tourists every year, such as Eiffel Tower and La Defense. A historical city which was well known from 17th century. With a population of one million it is the second largest tourist attraction. which attracts tourist due to the large number of monuments and museums. Nantes is generally a safe city. In the down Town area it is packed together therefore many business, and tourist centers are within walking distance of each other. Also This city has many parks, and museums. Major Cities Marine Environment There are no seas or oceans in France only surrounding it, such as the Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean sea. Did you know that part of the North sea that separates France from England is called "La Manche" in French but in England it is called the English channel. Also France has AMAZING beaches. But marine Environments aren't all about oceans and seas there are also many major rivers, especially along the borders of France. Such as the Loire, the Seine, the Garonne and the Rhône. Also most of these rivers are extremely important for transport. Flora and Fauna Fauna Flora In the north and the center of France there are forests of oak and beech and pine. In the south are pine forests and various oaks. Around the area of the Mediterranean sea are olive trees, vines, Mulberry and fig trees. In France there is also another plant called Marquis. From which the name came from the French resistance movement in world war 2. The alps are the home of many animals such as the brown bear, chamois, marmot and the alpine hare. In the forests are polecats, wild boar, and various deer. Hedgehog and shrew are common as are fox’s, weasel’s, bats’, squirrels badgers’, rabbit’s, mice, otters and beaver’s. The rivers are home to eels, pike, perch, carp, roach, salmon, trout and many more.
