As a recent graduate from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s of Science in Public Relations I believe that I am well fitted for this position. I am writing because I have become aware of a job opening that you have for an events and presentation coordinator. As an eager college graduate, I have a lot to offer as a potential option for this position. Throughout college I worked multiple different retail jobs. This has helped me gain experience dealing with many different types of clients. Not all clients will be easy to work with and working retail has helped me have patience and learn how to do whatever it takes to make the client happy. Over the summer before my senior year of college, I worked as an intern for Prodigal Media, which is a full service marketing and communications agency in Boardman, OH. I was able to meet with different clients and did a lot of work with helping them bring their ideas from their head to on paper and from on paper to a reality. As an intern I had a lot of responsibilities because of my skill base and because of the size of the company I was able to work one on one with a lot of the employees. Thank you for taking the time to consider me for this position. I will follow up with you in a week to discuss the position further. They are the doers, defined by their ability to bring new ideas into fruition. They roll up their sleeves to get things done and are unafraid to defy the status quo in the process. These revolutionaries remain on a constant journey of uncharted territory searching for a “More, Better and Different” lifestyle. We call these people, Persons of Interest! Our first persons of interest are Charlie Loudermilk and Ken Butler; they started Aaron’s by renting folding chairs for 10 cents per chair in 1955, and later expanded into office furniture rental in the 1960s. According to the computer, Ernie Talley, launched a “Blue Ocean Strategy” in the appliance and electronic industry. He opened the first Rent-To-Own store in 1965 with Chuck Sims as manager. Talley then proceeded to build the first Rent-To-Own chain, building 14 new stores between 1965 and 1974. Shortly after, Sims opened opened 3 “Action TV” rental stores of his own in 1967. With no know knowledge of Talley’s operation, Barry Gambini opened the first appliance Rent-To-Own store in California in 1968. Looking at my research, it says that Chuck Sims redefined previous Rent-To-Own marketing strategies when he relocated his stores from the innercity to perimeter shopping centers in 1970. This strategy expanded his customer base and introduced the Rent-To-Own industry to those living in suburban areas while providing a safer environment for his associates. A year later, he renamed his company Remco and began advertising on TV. Our next person of interest is Tom Devlin: the founder of “Sight & Sound” TV rental. He opened his first store in Wichita, Kansas in 1973 and within 5 years, he’d successfully opened 10 stores. Checking my database, I see it says that the following year Chuck Sims also acquired 14 stores for Ernie Talley. He then introduced “Store in a Box” in 1976, which resulted in larger stores that provide more displayed merchandise. Devlin later changed the name of “Sight & Sound” to “Rent-A-Center” in 1981 and within 2 years, had completed the first industry IPO and raised more than $9 million. That same year, Dennis Shields became the Executive Director of the TRIB buying group, and formed an alliance with AVB/Brand Source. This strategic moved not only expanded TRIB’s buying power, but provided a greater selection for his customers. According to my research, our next person of interest is Wayland Russell, who was featured in Forbes magazine’s 200 best companies twice. In 1986 he launched “Rainbow Rentals” with Jason Alford using the tag line “More, Better, Different.” Russell and Alford opened 6 stores within the same month and 6 additional stores the following year! In 1987, Russell revolutionized the industry when he collaborated with England Furniture. He eliminated the middleman and opened factory-direct purchasing. In the same year, Tom Devlin completed his strategic sale to Thorn EMI, raising $594 million, while Charlie Loudermilk and Ken Butler entered the Rent-To-Own industry and introduced “Big Box” stores. The following year, Loudermilk and Butler offered the “12-to-Own” option, which was the lowest term in the industry. Barry Gambini and Chuck Sims created APRO where Gambini served as APRO’s first president, which brings us to our next person of interest, Bill Keese, who became the first full-time APRO Executive Director in 1989 and established APRO as a legitimate enterprise. He is a major reason it has blossomed to the premier organization that it is today. During that same year Mark Speece and Mitch Fidel partnered with Ernie Talley to build the largest company in the industry. (What’s the name of the company?) My research also indicates that in the following year, Charlie Loudermilk and Ken Butler created Aaron’s franchise. In 1991, Wayland Russell was the first to offer rental computers to his customers. And 5 years later in 1996, Bill Keese aired the first APRO produced TV commercial. Within the same year, Larry Carrico followed suit and created his own marketing company “Imagery Marketing.” During this time, Wayland Russell and “Rainbow Rentals” became the only company in the industry to offer 100% paid premiums for hospitalization, disability, and life insurance to its associates. 1997 marked the height of sponsorship within the industry with Bill Keese partnering with Habitat for Humanity and Charlie Loudermilk and Ken Butler being sponsored by Nascar. The following year, Ernie Talley acquired Rent-A-Center from Thorn EMI. According to the computer, Bill Keese later launched a state of the art website in 2006 and then introduced the newly designed store layout in 2011. While in 2013, Mark Speece and Mitch Fidel built a system to support 2300 plus stores and (_____) employees. In 2013, the next person of interest is YOU! What new ideas will you bring forth to create a “More, Better, and Different” lifestyle? The site is undergoing testing and flaring gas is a normal part of this test. This type of flaring is standard practice for testing at any well site and it is not unusual for noise levels to rise and fall. Inspectors at ODNR have visited the site and have reported that there are no problems. The noise is only temporary and will last for 2 more weeks. We will do the best we can to reduce the impact on the neighbors. Thank you for your patience while we complete the testing of this well site. -30- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJm6JjE7A6w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rOWkhcYCyQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihaK3aGlXkQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EkopIuHEV8 Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania _____________________________________________________________________________________ 1 Morrow Way, Slippery Rock, PA 16057●www.sru.edu●330.607.6709 Contact: Cameron Belt, Public Relations Specialist 330.607.6709 cnb1002@sru.edu For Immediate Release SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY STUDENT PLANTS TREES AT NEW CHILDREN’S PARK SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2013)— A Slippery Rock University student plants trees at a local children’s park on Wednesday after a tragic fire. John Smith, 21, purchased 20 trees after hearing that a fire burnt down many of the trees at Slippery Rock Park. He spent most of his Wednesday afternoon digging holes and planting trees. “I grew up going to that park and it broke my heart to hear what had happened. I just want children to grow up and appreciate how beautiful the earth is,” Smith said. Smith’s selfless action has sparked many people to donate to help rebuild the park. Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania's premier public residential university. Slippery Rock University provides students with a comprehensive learning experience that intentionally combines academic instruction with enhanced educational and learning opportunities that make a positive difference in their lives. -30-
