1. Problem: To measure the health related fitness components muscular strength, muscular
endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance for students in grade 3.
2. Description: Students, male and female, age range from 11-12, grade 3. Students are fairly new
to this type of assessment and will most likely be their first experience with health related
fitness component tests. Ability level is currently unknown.
3. Identifying the Rating Scale: Implement a pre-test to determine the students’ ability and fitness
level. During the school year there will be activities and exercises to help improve the students’
fitness level, this way when the post-test is administered there should be visible improvements.
The post test will be implemented near the end of the school year and then counted as a part of
their final grade.
4. Components/Characteristics: Check to see if students have correct posture and form, show
effort, and progress from the beginning of the school year to the end. The assessments used to
measure the health related fitness components are pushups, which are used to measure
muscular strength, sit-ups to measure muscular endurance, mile run to measure cardiovascular
endurance, and sit- and -reach to measure flexibility. I chose to evaluate the students through
these four particular fitness components because they are an important part of an individual’s
progression towards overall physical fitness capabilities. Students will be assessed on similar
components throughout their school career; therefore, it will benefit them to get familiar with
and understand what is expected of them in regard to physical fitness.
5. Instrumentation and Methodology: Fair/Good /Excellent are the available ratings for each
fitness assessment. Fair is the lowest possible score a student can receive in all four
assessments. A fair score is worth 1 point and would show little to no effort, incorrect posture
or form, and no ability to reach the required repetitions, time, or distance, which is further
described in rubric. Good is the middle score a student can receive on the fitness assessments
and is worth two points. A good grade would show moderate effort, partially correct
form/posture, and meet the described repetitions, time, and distance listed in the rubric
attached. The best grade a student can receive is excellent and is worth three points. Excellent
would show great effort, perfect form/posture, and meet the required repetitions, time, and
distance listed on rubric. Record pretest and posttest scores on fitness score sheet and then
assess students using rubric. (See rubric attached)
6. Test Administer: Test administer will guide the students through the following series of
assessments. The administrator will fill out test score sheet for each student, and then use the
rubric below to document their skill level.
Equipment:
1. Timer
2. Sit and Reach box
3. Gymnasium
4. Track- if mile run is assessed outside
The 40 minute class period will be divided into five sections.
b. (10 Minutes ) Perform a warm-up that will focus on all muscle groups that are used
when performing the fitness assessments. Including two laps around the gymnasium, 15
jumping jacks, 10 arm circles forward and 10 backwards, calf, thigh, bicep, triceps, and
abdominal stretches.
c. Instruct students to get into partners. All assessments will be split into two groups. One
group is performing while the other group is motivating and observing their partner.
First, begin by performing the pushup test. Students will be instructed to get into three
rows with plenty of space around them. Remind students to use correct form and try
their best. Instruct students to complete as many pushups as they can in one minute. In
order for pushups to be considered as acceptable and recorded, correct form must be
used. Instruct students to switch positions with partner and repeat test. This test is used
to assess the students on their muscular strength. Observe and grade by using rubric
scale attached.
d. The second test is sit-ups. Have students remain in pairs and choose who will go first.
Instruct students to get show they are ready by getting into their sit-up positions.
Student who is performing the test should be lying down flat on their back, knees bent,
and hands by their sides. Their partner will hold their feet and count for them. Instruct
students to do as many sit-ups as they can in one minute time. Then switch roles with
partner and repeat test. The sit-up test will assess the students on their muscular
endurance. Observe and grade using rubric attached.
e. The third administered test is the sit and reach flexibility assessment. Have students
split off into two groups. One group will go get a drink of water while the other group
partakes in the sit and reach test, which will be directly observed by the instructor. Each
students score will be documented by instructor using the rubric attached. The sit and
reach is a test used to assess students on their level of flexibility.
f.
The final test is the mile run which assesses the students on their cardiovascular
endurance ability. Instruct students to run a mile around the track. Upon completion
students will make contact with the instructor to reassure they saw them finish and
mark down their time. Use rubric attached.

7. Analysis of Results:
First, students are assessed on four health related fitness components using the rubric below as
a pre-test. Then, towards the end of the year students are assessed again using the same
instructions and rubric. The pre-test is a guideline for the students to see what they have to
accomplish and work on during the school year to receive a better score on their post-test. The
post-test will count towards their overall grade; therefore it is a formative evaluation.
Grading Scale:
Students will perform the health related fitness tests at the best of their ability, setting a goal to
achieve an excellent rating in at least two components.
Ratings:
 Fair = 1 point
 12-16 points = A
 Good = 2 points
 8- 12 points = B
 Excellent = 3 points
 4 – 8 points = C
 0 – 4 points = D

The post-test assessment score will be 20% of their final grade.

If students explain they cannot participate in all or any of the fitness assessments they
must provide a doctor’s note stating they are not able to participate and explain what
their limitations are.
